Summary

This position is located with the Agricultural Research Service, Field Organization, Pacific West Area, Range & Meadow Forage Management Research, in Burns Oregon.

Duties

Help
  • Conduct range/plant ecology monitoring for plant abundance, diversity, and structure such as line-intercept, belt transect, and quadrats and plant identification with taxonomic keys.
  • Conduct lab and greenhouse work such as germination tests, growing plants from seed, plant physiological or ecosystem measurements, soil analyses, and weighing biomass and seed samples.
  • Assist in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, or rangeland environment, such implementing research protocols for experiments and observational studies.
  • Use ArcGIS or similar GIS to create basic maps, preferably including experience with ArcGIS Collector or similar map software or apps for field collection with geospatial data.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Time in grade:
Applicants must have one year at the next lower grade to be considered for the next higher grade (e.g. one year at the GS-04 grade level for consideration for the GS-05 grade level).

At the GS-05:
Qualifying experience for GS-5 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-4 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with rangeland or plant ecology or plant ecophysiology or soils research studies.

OR

Education: Completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position. Directly related subject-matter fields may include Biology, Ecology, Rangeland Ecology, Rangeland Resources, Rangeland Management, Rangeland Science, Botany, Plant Biology, Plant Physiology, Conservation Science, Ecosystem Science, Earth Science, Soil Science, Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Science, Forestry, Crop Science, Natural Resources (except fisheries and oceanography), and Agronomy; OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

A combination of education and specialized experience as described above.

At the GS-07:
Qualifying experience for GS-7 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with rangeland or plant ecology or plant ecophysiology or soils research studies; and coordinating rangeland or plant ecology or plant ecophysiology or soils research in a field or greenhouse setting.

OR

Education: One full year of graduate level education, if related. Related degree may include, Biology, Ecology, Rangeland Ecology, Rangeland Resources, Rangeland Management, Rangeland Science, Botany, Plant Biology, Plant Physiology, Conservation Science, Ecosystem Science, Earth Science, Soil Science, Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Science, Forestry, Crop Science, Natural Resources (except fisheries and oceanography), and Agronomy.

OR

A combination of education and specialized experience as described above.

At the GS-09:
Qualifying experience for GS-9 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-8 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with rangeland or plant ecology research studies; coordinating rangeland or plant ecology or plant ecophysiology or soils research in a field or greenhouse setting; and experience using various range science equipment such as environmental sensors or Geographic Information System (GIS) software.

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if related. Related degree may include, Biology, Ecology, Rangeland Ecology, Rangeland Resources, Rangeland Management, Rangeland Science, Botany, Plant Biology, Plant Physiology, Conservation Science, Ecosystem Science, Earth Science, Soil Science, Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Science, Forestry, Crop Science, Natural Resources (except fisheries and oceanography), and Agronomy.

OR

A combination of education and specialized experience as described above.
