The Critical Care Nurse, with assistance will be able to diagnose, monitor and treat patient responses to life-threatening health problems and coordinate the care delivered by various health care providers.
The Critical Care Nurse is responsible for administering, monitoring, documenting, and evaluating therapeutic interventions and regimens specific to ICU patients.
The Critical Care Nurse:
Uses independent and multidisciplinary, collaborative interventions to restore patient stability, anticipate patient care needs, prevent complications, and achieve and maintain optimal patient responses.
Assess patient' potential for wellness and responses to various treatment strategies.
Possesses the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting to facilitate the effective care of patients.
Is an expert in providing, directing or influencing the care of critically ill patients, their families and significate others in a variety of settings.
Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to adult and geriatric patients in the critical care environment.
Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status, and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs.
Is responsible and accountable for maintaining training required, attend/complete all mandatory review programs, and take responsibility for attending in-service and continuing education activities with continuous progression in knowledge and skills in critical care practice.

Maintain Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification
Maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
Is capable of assessing data reflective of the patient's status and interpreting the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their physical, emotional and age specific needs. Provides care as needed with as descried in the medical center and intensive care policies and procedures.
Identifies needs for possible discharge planning and appropriate referrals. Works collaboratively to anticipate needs such as discharge planning and patient teaching to promote a smooth transition throughout all levels of the continuum of care.
Documents on approved VA forms/computer programs. Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
Determines nursing diagnoses based on analysis of assessment data.
Plans and direct nursing care of ICU patients admitted to or referred from other services via contributions to the plan of care. Assures implementation of the plan of care.
Initiates patient care conferences with nursing staff and additional members of the interdisciplinary team.
Serves as a consultant throughout the Medical Center for clinical care problems related to the needs of ICU patients.
The nurse working in Critical Care reports directly to the Nurse Manager, and accountable to the Chief Nurse or designee.

Registration:

A physical examination prior to placement is required. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continues walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The employee may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. For Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or AstraZeneca/Oxford, full vaccination is 2 weeks after receiving the second dose in a 2-dose series. For Johnson and Johnson (J&J)/Janssen, full vaccination is 2 weeks after an employee has received a single dose.
HR Office staff must verify your vaccination status prior to issuing a final offer of employment and before you report for New Employee Orientation. [In addition, new hires must show vaccination documentation and submit their completed VA FORM 10230, COVID-19 Vaccination Form, to VA HR staff when reporting for New Employee Orientation. HR staff will upload vaccination information in the VA Light Electronic Action Framework (LEAF) system. If you are unable to obtain the COVID-19 vaccination due to a legally covered exception (i.e., medical or religious reasons), VA will provide additional information regarding what information or documentation is needed and how you can request an exception. If you request a legally required exception, you must first complete the VA FORM 10230, COVID-19 Vaccination Form, and return the form to the servicing HR Office staff within 2 business days. The HR Office staff will submit the form to your new supervisor of record for adjudication of the exception request. You may receive a final offer or be appointed while your request for medical or religious exception is being adjudicated.
