Health Informatics and Analytics is the specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge. Health informatics facilitates the integration of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom to support Veterans, nurses, and other providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings. This support is accomplished using information structures, information processes and information technology. The goal of health informatics is to improve the health of populations, communities, families, and individuals by optimizing information management and communication. These activities include the design and use of informatics solutions and technology to support all areas of healthcare, including, but not limited to, the direct provision of care, establishing effective administrative systems, managing, and delivering educational experiences, enhancing lifelong learning, and supporting research
The Cerner BCMA Coordinator integrates ergonomics and human-computer interaction (HCI) principles into informatics solution design, development, selection, implementation, and evaluation. He/she systematically determines the social, legal, regulatory, and ethical impact of an informatics solution on nursing and healthcare.
The Cerner BCMA Coordinator possesses an expert understanding of clinical treatment modalities, organization and administration of the VA healthcare delivery systems, educational principles, clinical information systems, accreditation and regulatory standards and program development. Core functions include:
Determining the most appropriate use of expertise in clinical informatics coordination
Veteran and staff education
Attention to system issues that require intervention
Quality/performance measures
The Cerner BCMA Coordinator evaluates hardware and software applications integrated within the electronic health record and ensures safety while leading change across teams/units. The Cerner BCMA coordinator:
Influences care outcomes by collaborating with all members of the interdisciplinary team.
Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the total health care of a specialized Veteran population in a clinical informatics specialty area.
Supports resolution of unusual or unique Veteran care problems or situations which require analytical, interpretive, and constructive thinking.
Functions as an internal/external consultant in evaluating programs, resources and services.
Initiates and maintains databases, prepares reports, and works collaboratively with others to assess variances and project needs.
Leads and/or facilitates recommendations for systems and/or resource changes that will serve to improve clinical application needs.
During electronic health record modernization, the Cerner BCMA Coordinator:
Executes all pre-deployment activities and defines the tasks needed to sustain the system post go-live.
Coordinates the equipment deployment and the endpoint device assessment.
Plans and coordinates all information system downtimes.
Performs routine reports regarding armband/medication scanning and medication response according to key Performance indicators.
Is responsible for all BCMA education, workflow changes and issue resolution.
Will participate on the Integrated Informatics Committee, ensure all policies and procedures are up to date and provide informatics support to all service lines.
The Cerner BCMA Coordinator is responsible for being self-directed in the performance of their scope and practice.

Registration: Condition of Employment. Physical Demands: Per VA Directive and Handbook 5019 - a physical examination will be conducted based on the physical requirements of the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continues walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Per the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you are fully vaccinated for COVID-19, 2 weeks after receiving the requisite number of doses of a COVID-19 vaccine approved or authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or that has been listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization. For Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or AstraZeneca/Oxford, full vaccination is 2 weeks after receiving the second dose in a 2-dose series. For Johnson and Johnson (J&J)/Janssen, full vaccination is 2 weeks after an employee has received a single dose.
HR Office staff must verify your vaccination status prior to issuing a final offer of employment and before you report for New Employee Orientation. [In addition, new hires must show vaccination documentation and submit their completed VA FORM 10230, COVID-19 Vaccination Form, to VA HR staff when reporting for New Employee Orientation. HR staff will upload vaccination information in the VA Light Electronic Action Framework (LEAF) system. If you are unable to obtain the COVID-19 vaccination due to a legally covered exception (i.e., medical or religious reasons), VA will provide additional information regarding what information or documentation is needed and how you can request an exception. If you request a legally required exception, you must first complete the VA FORM 10230, COVID-19 Vaccination Form, and return the form to the servicing HR Office staff within 2 business days. The HR Office staff will submit the form to your new supervisor of record for adjudication of the exception request. You may receive a final offer or be appointed while your request for medical or religious exception is being adjudicated.
