Duties

Help

  • Serves as Supervisory Anthropologist of the National Anthropological Archives (NAA), which includes the Human Studies Film Archives (HSFA).
  • Manages the NAA and HSFA  and uses judgement and initiative to develop collections goals and plans, including preparation of annual budget, which mirror Department and Museum goals and plans.
  • Oversees the preservation, security and safekeeping of the archival collections.
  • Oversees the processing of archival collections and preparation for digitization, including organization, arrangement, description (finding aids and inventories) and preservation, and the tracking of these activities.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements for Positions in the Smithsonian Institution:

Applicants must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in anthropology, history, biology, physical science, geology, human geography, or other closely related fields that primarily concern human adaptation to the environment or evolutionary development.

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, Applicants must possess the following....

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position specialized experience is defined as experience supervising or leading an anthropological program involving research and archival functions in a museum or archive with Indigenous or world cultural heritage materials informed by the principles of cultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistics or folklore.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

  • Knowledge of the principles and theoretical concepts of anthropology sufficient to manage or lead an anthropological archival research program.
  • Ability to manage and develop anthropological, folklore, or related archival collections.
  • Knowledge of preservation, security and safekeeping of archival collections. 
  • Knowledge of processing of archival collections.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category.
