Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS). The selectee is not required to report to a government office, however, the option to work in one of the Agency offices may be available.

The incumbent is a Data Science Coordinator for the ARS Big Data Initiative (BDI) and is responsible for a wide range of organizational and operational planning, scientific support, and science communications activities.

Duties

Help
  • Coordinates administrative activities, monitors progress, and compiles a record of the accomplishments of the Leadership Team, BDI workshops, trainings, and working groups.
  • Leads the collation and synthesis of complex research ideas, figures, and text generated by scientists using a high-performance computer (HPC) cluster into text and graphics for distribution to general audiences.
  • Coordinates the development of reports, briefing materials, and updates from CSIO, Leadership Team, workshops, and working groups.
  • Prepares reports and summaries for planning discussions and presentations by reviewing and analyzing scientific research summaries to provide information to the Leadership Team and other management staff.
  • Collaborates with the Leadership Team on management, administrative, and implementation issues of the BDI program. Maintains clear communication with the Leadership Team on all aspects of the BDI program performance and implementation.
  • Participates in CSIO and Leadership Team planning activities, including preparation of materials highlighting priority areas for scientific opportunities and program issues to be examined by the Leadership Team.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Time-in-grade restrictions apply for all candidates considered under merit promotion procedures and must be met by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of this vacancy announcement.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is planning or organizing scientific communication activities; managing scientific support for an agricultural, biological or natural resource organization; and conducting analyses on research data.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
