Duties

Help

As a Biologist (Invasive Species) your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide technical expertise to the field on the following topics: identification of invasive species (with emphasis on plants); tracking the threats of early detection species; management techniques for invasive species using principles of Integrated Pest Management (IPM); pesticide formulations and application methods; inventory; prioritizing plants and areas for management; writing management targets; preventing spread of invasives; and effectiveness monitoring. Specific tasks may include developing a library of management techniques for invasive plants and insects; tracking the distribution of potential new invaders to support early detection rapid response activities; staying abreast of new research particularly regarding management methods; developing and implementing experimental designs to compare efficacy of different management techniques; and providing expertise on use of pesticides (e.g., appropriate formulations or application methods).
  • Support refuges in hiring and training interns/strike teams or conservation crews. This may include collating refuge needs and preparing cooperative agreements for hiring. Training of seasonal staff may include conducting inventories using the regional mapping method, invasives identification, early detection/ rapid response, management and monitoring, and prevention of spread.
  • Assist with GIS and database management, support funding decisions, assist with prioritizing invasives for inventory and management, assist with developing management objectives and protocols, and participate in professional meetings and trainings for invasives.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 10/15/2021 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

Basic Requirement:

  1. Completion of a 4 year degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position. OR
  2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related discipline -- plus -- appropriate experience or additional education that is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in the biological sciences; agriculture, or natural resources. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above.
Minimum Qualification GS-09
  1. 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level. This experience has equipped me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized Experience includes: identifying native and invasive plants; planning methods for control of invasive species, such as mechanical, biological, or chemical control methods, appropriate for the targeted invasive species and environmental conditions and consistent with principles of Integrated Pest Management; managing invasive plants; and safely applying pesticides according to the label and all state and federal requirements. OR
  2. 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement.
Minimum Qualification GS-11
  1. 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level. This experience has equipped me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and is in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized Experience includes: identifying native and invasive plants; planning methods for control of invasive species, such as mechanical, biological, or chemical control methods, appropriate for the targeted invasive species and environmental conditions and consistent with principles of Integrated Pest Management; managing invasive plants; safely applying pesticides according to the label and all state and federal requirements; and providing training, guidance, and oversight in the monitoring and management of invasive species. OR
  2. 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if you are selected for the position, you will be required to produce the original official transcripts.

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

  • Skill in communicating effectively in writing and orally with audiences with differing degrees of technical expertise. This includes the ability to train seasonal staff in inventory and monitoring techniques and invasives identification.
  • Knowledge and ability to computer operating systems, and demonstrated experience in software application packages (e.g. ArcMap/ArcPro, Collector for ArcGIS Online (AGOL), R, and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, and Excel) to analyze and present biological data.
  • Skill in identifying plants and managing invasive plants.
  • Skill in safe application of pesticides according to the label and all state and federal requirements.
  • Knowledge of the Principles of Integrated Pest Management, and methods of managing invasive species (both pesticide and non-pesticide); and understand the selection and application of herbicides. Knowledge of and skill in accessing information about the environmental fate and impacts associated with various herbicides.
  • Knowledge of fish and wildlife biology, ecology, conservation biology, botany, restoration ecology and invasion ecology, particularly as it applies to the North Atlantic-Appalachian Region or Mountain-Prairie Region.
