This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until December 31, 2021. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be August 2, 2021, with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st AND 15th of each month, referrals will be contingent on the availability of vacant positions). This announcement will be used to fill RN positions for Nursing Surgery Service : Operating Room, Ambulatory Surgery Center and Outpatient Clinic

Ambulatory Surgery Center :
Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm

Duties:

  • Delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned clients in the Prescreening Clinic and the Ambulatory Surgery Center.
  • Demonstrates integration of bio-psychosocial concepts, cognitive skills and technical competence.
  • Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving care utilizing collaborative strategies with clients, family members and members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Requires knowledge of surgical procedures and sterile technique.
  • Required to meet the individual needs of patients and families in each level of post-anesthesia care based on patient acuity, census, and physical facility.
  • Monitor the recovery of the patient after the anesthesia and/or the surgery
Preferred Qualifications: ACLS certified. BSN with approximately one year of ASC experience.

Outpatient Surgery Clinic:

Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm

Duties:
  • Delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned clients in the Outpatient Surgery Clinic(s)
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures and sterile technique.
  • Demonstrate mature judgment, initiative, and proficiency in nursing skills.
  • Work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Monitor the recovery of the patient after the anesthesia and/or the surgery.
Preferred Qualification: BSN, MSN, At least one year experience in Outpatient Surgery Clinic(s) setting or OR.

Operating Room:

Monday-Friday; All Tours (7:15am-3:45pm & 9:30am-6:00pm) including weekday/weekends/holidays

Duties:
  • Observes and assesses patient's health status and critically ill emergency patients by physical assessment and examination, interviewing patient and family members and patient's health history. Independently assesses and interprets the data patient's condition and recognizes normal/abnormal parameters for appropriate nursing action to be taken.
  • Develop, implements and evaluates an individualized plan of care and will coordinate to deliver care to patients undergoing operative procedures.
  • Adheres to the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) Standards of Care to develop, implement, evaluate and revise an appropriate problem-oriented care plan, problem-solving nursing plan for the care of patients in the perioperative setting.
  • Functions independently as the primary circulating nurse for the assigned Operating Room with full competency and understanding of the declared surgical procedures.
  • Sets up operating room with instruments as specifically required for type of operation to be performed; arranges instruments and other articles in specified order on portable table immediately accessible to, the surgeon; anticipates surgeon's needs for instruments, sponges, sutures, suction tubes, and other items and hands them to surgeon in most expeditious manner; maintains aseptic field.
  • Provide expertise in surgical equipment such as electro-surgical machines, microscopes, video equipment, robotics and other special equipment to aid in the efficiency of the surgery to avoid hazards to the patient.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: At least 3 years experience, BLS, Bachelor in Nursing recommended not required.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.
