San Francisco Maritime NHP includes historic vessels, historic buildings and landscapes, a maritime museum building, and a vast array of maritime collections, archives, and a unique small craft. It has the largest museum and research collection in the National Park Service, and the Maritime Research Center represents an immense resource for San Francisco and Pacific Coast maritime history. Please visit find a park for additional park information.The successful applicant will serve as the park Historian (Maritime); as such they will be the point of contact for both the history of the park itself and the history of the Pacific Coast maritime industry. The Historian will routinely engage other park staff who may be conducting research in support of preservation projects, interpretation activities and exhibits development. This position requires active involvement in decisions affecting historic resources and oversight on the development of park generated historical content, in addition to scholarly pursuits.

Major Duties: Conduct historical research on various maritime topics using a wide range of resources.

Prepare historic preservation documents, compliance and background materials as required by Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), an organization's Management Policies, and cultural resources management guidelines.

Research, analyze and write about history within the maritime framework, including topics related to individual ships, general seafaring, shipping, and the role of maritime commerce in our country's development; prepare such written material for a wide variety of audiences.

Make presentations in parks, public gatherings, and professional meetings on historical themes and research results.

Investigate new techniques to preserve, or protect and interpret the history of cultural resources when existing methods prove insufficient.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-06/18/2021-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application.

To be eligible for this position, you must meet one of the Basic Requirements AND the Additional Qualification Requirement.

Basic Requirements for GS-0170:
Possess a Bachelor's or higher degree in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.

-OR-

Possess a combination of Education and Experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in the job opportunity announcement, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Have at least one (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service performing the following: (1) conducting historical research on various maritime topics using a wide range of resources; (2) recommending methods to preserve, protect, or restore historic or culturally significant buildings or objects; (3) preparing historical reports and briefings to provide historical analysis and perspective; (4) partnering with external stakeholder groups to complete projects or share best practices.

EDUCATION: Successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. Note: You must submit a copy of your transcripts with your application.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Have an equivalent combination of the specialized experience described in "A" and the education described in "B." The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".




Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

Physical Demands: The work is sedentary, but at times requires travel to repositories of information and may require visits to remote sites which require walking or riding over rough, uneven surfaces. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Most work is performed in offices, archives, and libraries. Assignments may entail work with dusty records or objects.
