Duties

Help
  • You will plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate professional nursing services in the care of inpatient OB/GYN patients, including those with normal and complicated pregnancies and general gynecological problems.
  • You will provides care to patients presenting for both complicated and uncomplicated pregnancy and labor concerns such as, but not limited to preterm labor, rupture of membranes, decreased fetal movement, signs/symptoms of labor, trauma in pregnancy.
  • You will provide newborn care for vaginal deliveries, routine scheduled Cesarean and emergent cesarean sections; and implement routine or high risk transition care protocols for normal and high risk newborns following delivery.
  • You will complete a full psychosocial/physiological nursing assessment on all newly admitted patients, initiate a plan of care, identify abnormalities, and prioritize patient care problems.
  • You will administer complex medications by any route as ordered within the guidelines of nursing practice, recognize adverse effects, and assist with remedial measures as necessary.

  • Must possess and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. This position requires rotating shift work.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care for OB/GYN patients (e.g. women of childbearing age, newborn infants), including those with normal and complicated pregnancies, and general gynecological problems.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; OR
  • At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.

A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (external link). In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional information

IAW BUMEDINST 6220.9B, all personnel who may come in contact with patients, must receive and maintain appropriate vaccination against seasonal influenza. The incumbent must be immunized on an annual basis against influenza.

IAW BUMEDINST 6230.15, health care employees who have direct contact with patients will receive appropriate immunization against communicable diseases unless a current immunization, a protective titer, or a medical exemption is documented. Employees who have contact with or potential exposure to human blood or blood products are provided hepatitis B virus vaccine IAW the local blood borne pathogen exposure-control plan.

IAW BUMEDINST 1500.15F Employees whose primary clinical responsibilities involve caring for pediatric patients in clinics, inpatient units, and critical care and specialty areas such as emergency room, neonatal intensive care, and pediatric intensive care must be additionally trained in PALS, NRP, S.T.A.B.L.E., and adhere to local policy.

Work is performed in the hospital and clinic where exposure to infectious and contagious disease may be present. Some degree of hazard also exists in working with radiological testing, radiosurgery,cryosurgery with Nitrogen Dioxide (N02) and coming in contact with body fluids and tissue. Also, some degree of hazard exists in working with emotionally upset or seriously ill patients.

Position requires sitting, standing and walking for extensive periods of time. The ability to stoop, bend, push against immovable objects, pull, reach, and lift up to and periodically exceeding 50 pounds are required to move and transport patients and equipment.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.

Priority consideration will be given to military spouse preference and family member preference eligible residing in the commute area of the duty location for this position. Commute area is defined as the geographic area surrounding the duty location in which people can reasonably be expected to travel back and forth daily.
