Manages and coordinate the in-house digitization and reformatting of audiovisual materials on an as-needed basis for preservation and to fulfill requests for sound and video recordings for use by researchers, exhibits, and the Archives’ website and other products, and as part of a larger collections’ digitization program.
Oversees outsourced preservation projects including: managing contracts with vendors for the preservation of audiovisual materials; budgeting; developing statements of work based on current best practices for preservation; packing and shipping of collection materials; quality assurance of preservation files and metadata; and tracking work, files, and original archival objects.
Manages and document audiovisual collections management policies, procedures, best practices, archival standards, and workflows.
Process archival collections, or portions of collections, that contain large quantities of audioand/or moving image materials.
Participates in Smithsonian pan-institutional efforts related to archival audiovisual collection management, preservation, and access, including emerging efforts to develop a collaborative, pan-institutional workflow for scaling up audiovisual preservation in the form of mass digitization, and shared storage initiatives.

Qualifications
All applicants must meet the basic education requirements below:
Bachelor's degree in archival science orbachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
or
Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Evaluation of Experience:
Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.
In addition to the basic requirement above, applicants must meet one of the following:
Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as applying current archival principles, concepts, standards, best practices, and methodologies to maintain a sustainable collections management plan for the assessment, preservation, electronic description, processing, continued acquisition, digital reformatting; and access of analog and tape-based audiovisual formats..
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
Or Education: Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree related to the position.

Ability to use and troubleshoot specialized equipment and software used with archival audiovisual materials including equipment and software used for digitization.
Ability to procure services from specialized audiovisual preservation vendors, create statements of work, and to assess the digital preservation files and metadata they deliver.
Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, and document a wide range of archival activities.
Knowledge of current and emerging archival principles, concepts, methodology, national best practices and procedures for performance in activities that comprise collections processing, arrangement, preservation, and description.
Ability to communicate orally and interact with a wide variety of staff, contractors, volunteers, and interns and other personnel within and outside the Archives of American Art.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
