DEVELOPMENTAL INTERN: This is an indefinite, Excepted Service appointment that may continue if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available.

Interns may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment.

Major Duties: This position is a developmental Pathways Intern position with an emphasis on Archeology in the Resource Stewardship and Planning Division. Gettysburg National Military Park preserves the site of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg and Gettysburg National Cemetery, where President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address.

-The primary duties of this position involve assisting archeological staff in the completion of archeological surveys.
-Fieldwork will consist of archeological/ metal detecting surveys to identify areas that could be potentially impacted from project activities. Additionally, archival research, site recordation, photo documentation, mapping, and laboratory analysis of recovered cultural materials will be required.
-Participates as a field crew member. He/she will conduct routine archeological surveys in areas planned for project work, employing a combination of shovel-testing, metal detection, and visual inspection.
-Identifies and delineates archaeological sites, prepare site location maps, record findings, photograph and draw, as appropriate, artifacts recovered, prepare site sketches, perform laboratory analysis of recovered artifacts, and catalog and prepare for curation recovered materials. Reports such findings and, in consultation with the Park's Archeologist, prepare recommendations to be included in planning documents.
-The work may include archival research, field investigations, laboratory analysis, and artifact cataloguing.
-Such work requires a basic understanding of professional archeological principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
-Field work requires long periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, and carrying objects over 25 pounds over rough, rocky, and sometimes hazardous surfaces.
-In addition, the incumbent(s) may be exposed to prolonged heat, humidity, and stinging insects.
-The work requires regular and recurring work in a forest environment and packing heavy surveying equipment.
-A physical capacity for working outdoors, often in isolated areas, is required.
-Laboratory/office work requires longs periods of sitting and mental effort, concentrating on minute details, data entry, and drafting precisely scaled sketches and maps.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed both indoors and occasionally outdoors with moderate risks.

FPL GS-07: Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

  • UNIFORM: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • WORK SCHEDULE: You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • TRIAL PERIOD: The entire period served under the Intern Program counts as a trial period.
  • TRAVEL: You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • GOVERNMENT CHARGE CARD: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
  • HOUSING: Government housing may be available.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/22/2021-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess AT LEAST ONE of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: 1) Uses knowledge of the methods, procedures, and methods applied to the archeological record with general supervision to solve problems and achieve project goals; 2) Participates and leads small scale archeological field surveys, independently records site data and prepares survey records (site maps, photographs, artifact forms, field notes, spatial data, etc.), has the ability to identify and interpret artifact assemblages and archeological contexts, and integrates archeological findings to inform interpretative and park planning goals. 3) Demonstrates an ability to condense large amounts of information/analysis into concise and well-organized narratives. (You must include months/years and work schedule to include hours per week worked.)

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 4 years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. You must include transcripts. I do not have the specialized experience described in 1A above; however, I have four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field. (Related fields of study include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.) You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 36 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

AREA INFORMATION: Gettysburg National Military Park encompasses roughly 6,000 acres, and surrounds the Borough of Gettysburg. Eisenhower National Historic Site, a 690-acre site containing the home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, is also administered by the park. The park has an annual visitation of approximately 1.2 million visitors. The Borough of Gettysburg is economically dependent upon tourism and the surrounding area is primarily agricultural. All services are available locally, including educational (K-12, Gettysburg College and Harrisburg Area Community College), medical, religious, shopping and recreational. Larger metropolitan areas, including Baltimore, MD and Washington D.C. are within a 1 ½ hour driving distance from Gettysburg.
