Current EPA employees in the commuting area of Washington, DC who are currently serving on a Pathways Intern appointment*. *Pathways Interns are enrolled students or individuals who have been accepted for enrollment seeking a diploma, certificate, bachelor’s degree, graduate degree, or professional degree from a qualifying educational institution on a full- or half-time basis, including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program.

Duties

Help

You will:

  • Assist with varied but routine environmental protection work to support higher level members of the branch or division for planning for program management of environmental programs;
  • Review and summarize a variety of environmental program information data for supervisor’s use in preparing reports and programs evaluations;
  • Assist higher graded specialists by performing clear cut assignments that allow employee to become familiar with the basic EPA statues and regulations; and
  • Work as a team member on a special project or study teams performing day-to-day staff operations to assist higher level analysts in the organization to which assigned.

You will spend less than 25% of your work time on contracts, grants/cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements.

You must have and maintain good academic standing as defined by your academic institution.

If you are selected, the entire period served under the Internship Program will be a trial period.

This position is designated as Low Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation. All conditions of the pre-employment security process must be met before an official letter of employment can be issued with a report for duty date.

Qualifications

If you are applying for a grade level higher than your current grade, you must have education and experience as described below to qualify for this position:

To qualify for the GS-4 level, you must meet one of the following requirements: completion of one full academic year of study and two periods of Intern work experience; OR completion of one and a half academic years of study and one period of Intern work experience.
NOTE:  One period of Intern work experience is the equivalent of two months (320 hours).

Interns without not-to-exceed dates who successfully complete the program may be converted to a term or permanent position in the competitive service without further competition.

This position has portable work. If selected for this position, you may be authorized to telework after meeting eligibility requirements if approved by the supervisor/manager. Telework is available based on agency policy and/or applicable collective bargaining agreement which may not allow for full-time telework. NOTE: The agency is currently utilizing maximum telework flexibilities due to COVID. Once normal operations resume, you will be required to report to the location stated in this announcement.

If you are selected, travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid by EPA.  Any travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting to work in this position will be your responsibility.
