This position is in the Office of Safety Recommendations and Communications, Media Relations Division in Washington, DC. The incumbent will manage all aspects of media relations and provide on-scene media relations support to active NTSB accident investigations.

As a Public Affairs Specialist, GS-1035-14, you will:
Write news releases, media advisories, Tweets, key messages, talking points or other media communications to convey information to identified audiences.
Respond to requests for information from the media or designate an appropriate spokesperson or information source (subject matter expert).
Develop plans or materials to communicate organizational activities that are beneficial to public safety.
Study the objectives, promotional policies, or needs of organizations to develop public relations strategies that will influence public opinion or promote ideas, products, or services.
Coach senior leaders, agency employees, in effective media relations or public communication techniques.
Establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with news media.
Physical Demands:The work includes a mixture of sedentary and physically demanding tasks. The incumbent may be exposed to rigorous exercise and long hours while on-scene at an accident or while staffing agency leadership while on travel. Travel is required, often with little advanced notice. In addition, incumbent will serve as a duty officer on a rotating basis. In that capacity, the incumbent is on call 24 hours per day, for 7 straight days.
Work Environment:Work is performed in an office setting as well as on-scene during accident investigations and where fact-finding work takes place. The incumbent may be exposed to a variety of weather conditions and other environmental discomforts, unforgiving topography, and debris hazards. Also, while risk assessments are made, appropriate mitigation measures taken, and personal protective equipment used, there may be the possibility of exposure to poisonous, explosive, or other hazardous materials associated with the accident sites to which the agency deploys.
There is no educational substitution at this grade level.
