Reviews FOIA requests to identify the types of records sought by the requester and ensures reasonable, properly-documented searches are conducted for responsive records.
Performs critical analyses of responsive documents and ensures any records responsive to FOIA requests are reviewed consistent with the FOIA and the Department?s FOIA regulations, policy and guidance.
Conducts analysis under the FOIA to determine which documents should be released or withheld from disclosure under the FOIA.
Utilizes electronic tools to search and collect documents and uses electronic tools to review and prepare records for release. Assembles and reviews proposed FOIA release packages for accuracy and compliance with the FOIA.
Reviews and analyzes appeals from denials of access to records requested under the FOIA and recommends final agency decisions on the release/non-release of records.
Keeps abreast of recent developments in FOIA law, including recent court and department decisions, current legislative bills or problems encountered within the FOIA program.
Assists the AS-IA FOIA officer with developing FOIA processes that conform to established Department procedures and policies.
Serves as a liaison to external FOIA requesters and internal Department employees to clarify and resolve issues relating to specific FOIA requests or the overall FOIA process and procedures.
Coordinates responses with legal staff and management as appropriate, conducts awareness reviews, and briefs management on requests of legally-sensitive, controversial, or politically sensitive nature
Coordinate FOIA requests with Congressional and Court-ordered requests for the Office of the Assistant Secretary ? Indian Affairs.
Assists SOL or other Government attorneys in the preparation of the agency?s defense in litigation. Works with agency counsel and the United States Attorney?s Office to develop reasonable production schedules for the release of agency records.

Qualifications
GS-13: To qualify for this position, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent analyzing and responding to requests for information under the FOIA; experience analyzing appeals from denials of access to records requested under the FOIA and recommending final decisions; experience supporting denial packages and ensuring they provide strong rational to support the organization's position.
