Summary

This position serves as a Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Claremore, Oklahoma. The facility has 25-50 beds. Full services available include general medicine and surgery, pediatrics and outpatient service. This position reports to the Supervisory Clinical Nurse in charge of the ICU. Help

  • Develop, implement, evaluate and revise patient care plans to meet the needs of assigned patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
  • Provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served by applying growth and development principles to assess and interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify patient needs and provide the care needed.
  • Operate, monitor and interpret results for general medical and critical care equipment such as infusion pumps, ventilators and other respiratory equipment.
  • Monitor and/or administer therapy to a cardiac, respiratory compromised or hemodynamically unstable patient.
  • Professional knowledge of nursing care principles, procedures, ethics, practices and processes required to assess nursing needs of assigned patients in the Intensive Care Unit.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957. Seasonal Influenza immunization is required for civilian health care facility staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

Position may be subject to an alternate work schedule, call back, rotating shifts, nights/weekends/holidays.

Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Degree and License Waiting Period for Impending Graduates: The Hiring Manager/Selecting Official may elect to utilize an available flexibility wherein applicants who are currently enrolled and expected to complete the required education and obtain the required licensure within 9 months of applying, may be deemed tentatively qualified. The eligibility date is established based on the date of application and not the closing date of the announcement or any cut-off date used for certificates of eligible candidates.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

AND

License: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States (Applicants must list their license number on their resume, along with the expiration date, OR submit a copy of their Nursing license that includes the expiration date. Acceptable verification of licensure includes a print out from a State Board of Nursing website [or other applicable license verification website that reflects your licensure status].).

In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate the education and/or work experience listed below for the specific grade level(s) you are applying to. Your work experience must be equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the type of work and/or tasks as stated for the grade level(s) you are applying to:

GS-5: Possess a bachelor's degree in Nursing with no experience;
OR Possess a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing AND have one (1) full year of professional nursing experience. This experience includes: implementing a plan of care for assigned patients; providing nursing interventions based on plan of care; and evaluating the effectiveness of the plan of care.

OR Posses a bachelor's degree in Nursing AND at least one (1) full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level). Examples of experience include: implementing and evaluating a plan for care for assigned patients; and monitoring life support equipment for sudden changes in condition.
OR Possess a diploma or associate degree in professional nursing AND two (2) full years of professional nursing experience. Examples of experience include: implementing and evaluating a plan for care for assigned patients; and monitoring life support equipment for sudden changes in condition.
OR Completion of one (1) full year of graduate education in a professional nursing educational program.

GS-9: Posses a master's degree in professional nursing;
OR One (1) full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or above) AND possess a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program. Examples of experience include: providing patient care for moderately to severely ill patients; assessing, developing, and implementing a plan of care, evaluating and modifying care as needed; providing clinical nursing expertise, care and education to diverse patient populations; identifying potential crisis situations and responding in emergency/code situations; and promoting and providing health care teaching to patients and family members.

GS-10: Possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field.
OR One (1) full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level) AND possess a diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program. Examples of experience include: planning, scheduling and providing comprehensive nursing care for critically ill patients; managing complex patient care situations involving multiple IV lines, hemodynamic monitoring equipment, respiratory therapy, feeding tubes, and ventilator equipment; initiating emergency care; providing support and education to patients and families.

The selected individual is required to maintain licensure requirements. If licensure is not maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Additional information

IHS selectees whose duties and responsibilities require them to work permanently, temporarily, or occasionally, in a federally-operated hospital, clinic, or health station must receive at least one of the two doses of COVID-19 vaccine in a two-dose series, or one dose of COVID-19 vaccine in a single-dose before entry on duty to their position or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.
