Help

Provider Primary Care for a group of patients ranging in age from through geriatric years, taking into consideration diagnosis, physical psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs.

Provides leadership in the application of the nursing process to patient care, organizational process and/or systems, improving outcomes at the service level.

  • Uses the nursing process with special expertise to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care for an assigned group of patients with the goal of improving overall outcomes for these patients.
  • Performs initial histories and physical examinations on outpatients and inpatients.
  • Provide ongoing assessment and reassessment of patients with acute episodes and chronic illnesses, incorporating age-specific criteria in the plan of care.
  • Orders laboratory tests, x-rays, EKG's and comparable diagnostic procedures, i.e., CT scan, IVP's, MRI's and Bone scans.
  • Supports performance measure by carrying out preventive health measures and following clinical guidelines for chronic disease cohorts.
  • Initiates and expedited Urology and Surgical (SPECIALTY Services) consults as needed, utilizing approved criteria as specified by the service, including remote and non-VA providers.
  • Schedules special tests and studies as indicated.
  • Makes appropriate progress notes in CPRS, updates problem lists, and utilizes order entry for all medications.
  • Provides education and counseling to patients, their families and/or significant others.
  • Admits patients according to admission criteria, monitors progress and assumes care after discharge.
  • Prescribes medication, according to federal and state regulations.
  • The NP may not prescribe IV chemotherapy agents.
  • Collects body fluid specimens as needed.
  • Performs IM injections.
  • Sutures minor lacerations and removes sutures.
  • Initiates appropriate emergency care for patients in life threatening situations.

Qualifications


Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a nurse practitioner in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE
  • Maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse II - Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity (including depth perception), keen hearing (aide permitted), clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity in both hands. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking (2-4 hours), standing (2-6 hours), stooping, sitting, bending, pulling (1-2 hours), and pushing (1-2 hours). lifting (>50 pounds), carrying (>50 pounds). Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. Must be able to work closely with others, as well as protracted or irregular hours of work. Must be compliance with the use of ergonomic exercises and employee safety requirements

Additional information

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
