  • As a Forestry Technician (Hotshot) ,GS - 0462 - 4, your typical work assignments and/or responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Work as a trainee engine operator driving fire vehicles, operating pumps, and making hose lays.
  • Locate hot-spots and mop up fire edges.
  • Construct a fireline using various hand tools and power tools.

Qualifications

GS 04: 6 Months of general experience and 6 months of specialized OR 2 years above high school with courses related to forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

General Experience:Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, OR experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or process of the broad subject area of the occupation. Can be evidenced of cultural, soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of the land use; or forest or range fire control, prevent on, or suppression work.

Specialized Experience:Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Forestry aid or technician work. Engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on nonforest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment. Farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use. Forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work. As a skilled wildland firefighter, you may be assigned to carry out specialized assignments such as tree falling, backfire, and burnout operations. Utilize a variety of specialized tools, equipment and techniques while actively managing wildfires. May be required to operate light vehicles and 4X4s. Seasonal experience may also be creditable.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS:This position requires meeting the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Selective factors for a Firefighter and the following qualifications per Standards for Interagency Hotshot Crew Operations: Firefighter (FFT2) and required training I-100, S-130, S-190 and L-180. You must provide a current copy of your Incident Qualification and Certification System (IQCS) master record or other agency equivalent documentation which verifies you meet the required NWCG qualifications for this position when submitting your application.   • Primary Core Qualification: Firefighter (FFT2)
  • Additional Required Training: I-100, S-130, S-190 and L-180.

One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education which shows the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
