About the Position: This position is located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD in the Director for Surgery, Department of Preoperative Nursing, Main Operating Room. The Main Operating Room has 20 Operating Room suites utilized by a broad range of surgical services. This department has 24/7 staffing which provides the ability to perform scheduled surgeries during regular hours or emergent after-hours, weekends, and holidays.

Duties

Help
  • Collaborates with surgeons in one or more surgical services to assess, coordinate, plan, and implement the newest approaches and practices to deliver efficient, cost effective surgical care for the beneficiary population.
  • Coordinates with physicians and other staff preoperatively, to develop a multi-disciplinary, intra-operative plan of care.
  • Coordinates equipment and supplies, positions patients, and communicates with family members.
  • Utilizes the perioperative nursing process to identify patient problems and generate a nursing diagnosis.
  • Documents patient's status on a continual basis, revising plan of care, as needed.
  • Provide nursing care before, during, and after operative procedures.
  • Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team assessing patients, planning care, and communicating with other members of the team.
  • Uses specialized equipment using sterile technique, and documenting care and interventions according to policy.
  • Coordinates with and provides direction for para-professionals, delegating duties and tasks as appropriate.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.

  • This position has been designated ?Mission Essential?. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • CNOR certificate is highly preferred

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Nurse (Operating Room):

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must submit a copy of your certification at the time of application)

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. (Note: You must submit a copy of your certification with your application package.)

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your registration with your application package.)

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 7, 2017 or before. You will be required to provide approximate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience: One year of experience performing professional nursing duties, which includes: assisting surgeons in the operating room with surgical procedures; assessing patients to develop perioperative nursing care plans; utilizing specialized surgical equipment; using sterile technique; and utilizing automated systems and programs, such as Essentris and Composite Health Care Systems (CHCS). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
