This job opportunity is for a Cartographic Technician and is located in the Geography Branch, National Processing Center (NPC). This position provides assistance for the Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS) and a wide variety of geoprocessing tasks performed to support surveys, censuses, evaluations, and special projects.  This position is included in the bargaining unit.

The individual selected for this position will:

  • Use sophisticated interactive software to update spatial digital databases.
  • Use sophisticated interactive software, digital databases, and investigative methods to: (1) assign geographic location codes to address information that is often substandard or conflicting; and (2) research and resolve discrepancies between geographic databases.
  • Aid in researching basic criteria for defining specific types of geographic subdivisions and procedures for their delineation.
  • Review basic source materials selected for use in displaying subdivided areas.
  • Examine automated methods of recording, plotting and displaying statistical boundaries, other map features, and analysis of data.
  • Evaluate geographic processing resources to determine which types are most valuable to specified projects.

Tour of Duty: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is defined as experience in cartography or in a related field such as photogrammetry or geodesy, where the work required similar knowledge and skills.  You qualify for the grade 07 if you possess 52 weeks of specialized experience that equipped you with the skills needed to perform the job duties.  This experience must have been equivalent to at least the grade 06.  In addition to the specialized experience definition above, applicants must document experience in the review of map source materials ensuring a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail; the use of sophisticated interactive software to update spatial digital databases; exercising judgment to carry out functions such as digitizing, evaluating and organizing data; digitizing map data for all types of topographic, hydrographic, and transportation features shown on a variety of map types.

Education Substitution: Graduate education or internship meets the specialized experience requirement only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.  One full year of graduate education (26 quarters or 18 semester hours) meets the specialized experience requirement. 

Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations, (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  2. A copy of your SF-50 “Notification of Personnel Action”, documenting your RIF separation, noting your position, grade/band level, and duty location, and/or Agency certification of inability to place you through RPL, etc.;
  3. A copy of your latest performance appraisal including your rating; and
  4. Any documentation from your agency that shows your current promotion potential.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
