Summary

The Assistant Director of Education, Outreach and Visitor Services is a senior management position with the overall museum responsibility to define and to direct the development and implementation of an education, outreach and visitor programs for all of National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), with the goal of expanding the public impact of the museum and providing a first class experience for our visitors.

Duties

Help

  • Leads and manages a strong, central interpretive and education and outreach function, consisting of programs that further the stated goals of the office and strengthen the Museum’s educational mission.
  • Oversees the ongoing conception, development, and implementation of a museum-wide audience plan.
  • Develops fundraising proposals for submission to funding agencies within and outside of the Smithsonian Institution for the support of museum education projects, and works with the Development team on other fundraising activities.
  • Establishes a leadership style that emphasizes open and clear written and oral communications, within the office, between offices, and through appropriate supervisory channels.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

1. Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

or

2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above.

In Addition to the basic education requirement, you must have the following:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the 14 grade level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as experience developing and managing a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and a varied, yet integrated set of education activities, in a large and complex institutional setting, that serve a range of audiences; setting goals, timelines and budgets; allocating resources; and identifying training needs to implement high quality educational activities.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  2. Skill in the development of programs and materials in a variety of formats for a range of audiences in informal education, school, community, and home settings, based on a rich set of research and content resources.
  3. Ability to develop, manage, evaluate, and attract funding for strategic educational and outreach plans activities.
  4. Ability, as demonstrated by experience in a senior management position of in a large, multi-functional institution setting, to lead a multi-disciplinary staff with different levels of expertise, build partnerships internally and externally, and promote new initiatives that incorporate the most effective educational approaches.
