Duties

Help

This position may be filled at the GS-05 or GS-06 grade level. At the full performance GS-09 level, the incumbent serves as a Hydrologic Technician.

At the GS-05 and GS-06 levels, the duties of this position are developmental in nature and lead to the full performance level of GS-09. The incumbent may be non-competitively promoted to the next level of the position upon meeting all regulatory requirements; certification by the supervisor of successful performance; completion of all training requirements; and the availability of work at the next higher grade level. Note: Promotion is not automatic.

At the GS-06 level the incumbent:
-Conducts pitot tube and current meter measurements; takes water samples; and measures the depth of groundwater wells.
-Maintains water accounting records, files, and maps, and develops delivery and lost reports.
-Uses computer programs to enter and download data from field monitoring instrumentation into automated databases.
-In the absence of the Friant Dam Tender in charge of water operations and deliveries, assumes the responsibilities of this position.
-Maintains hydrologic recording and measuring equipment.
-Assists in providing for a healthful workplace by complying with all Reclamation regulations regarding safety standards; conducts safety meetings; and writes project plans and job hazard analyzes

Qualifications

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience or additional education as defined below:

GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service OR successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelor's degree with (a) major study in an appropriate field of science, engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics.

Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, applicants must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs. 

GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service.

Definition of Specialized Experience: To meet specialized experience, your resume must describe experience that demonstrates the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities as follows:

GS-05: Experience collecting and processing hydrologic data; operating measurement and recording instruments and devices (stream gauges, pressure transducers); performing related duties supporting professional work in hydrology. These examples are not all inclusive.

GS-06: Experience collecting, selecting, computing and processing water quality data; using software applications to compute and manage water quality data, charts, presentation graphics and reports; using and deploying water quality instrumentation (turbidity meters, multi-probes, data loggers and temperature loggers); or performing related duties supporting professional work in water quality. These examples are not all inclusive.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This vacancy announcement allows substituting education for experience. Additional information

Relocation: Travel and relocation expenses are not authorized and are the responsibility of the selectee.

Telework: Reclamation has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisory approval. This is not a virtual position.

Conditions of Employment:
-This position requires completion of a one-year probationary period.
-Successful adjudication of personnel security investigation required.
-Travel is required approximately 20% of the time.
-Operation of a government vehicle is required; therefore, you must possess and maintain a valid State's driver's license.
-Satisfactory completion of a medical examination is required before assignment to the position.
-All Federal employees are required by PL 104-134 to have federal payments made by direct deposit.
-During certain times incumbent may be required to work more than 8 hours per day.
-Required to work rotating weekends to perform Dam Tender duties at Friant Dam.
-Operates motor vehicles, boats, and mobile equipment in the accomplishment of assigned duties. All equipment is to be operated in regards to Bureau of Reclamation, and SCCAO regulations and guide lines.
-Routinely operates small crafts and boats on reservoirs and rivers. Incumbent must be able to obtain certification to operate a water vessel by completing Reclamation's training on Motorboat Operation Certification Course (MOCC).

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

5. Knowledge of standard laboratory methods and safety protocols, data quality control concepts, and procedures to support chemists in laboratory analysis of water samples.
