Duties

Help

Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates patient care, initiates changes in the system for delivering patient care based on current concepts and findings from research and/or studies; uses sound judgment in making decisions; shares expertise with others; acts as a consultant; and identifies, analyzes, and resolves patient care problems whose resolution results in significant improvement in care. Responsible for providing diagnostic and clinical care in a practice setting as defined by clinical privileges. Is a member of at least one regional or national pain society and participates in pain related CE activity.

  • Expert clinical and patient advocate in pain management
  • Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches in management of complex patient populations.
  • Provides specialized consultation and collaboration with physicians, LIP, peers, and others in the health care community to develop, implement, and assure continuity of individualized treatment plans.
  • Functions in an advanced level of nursing practice characterized with complex clinical decision making.
  • Performs comprehensive history and physical examinations and initiates treatment when indicated for acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Orders diagnostic laboratory and imaging tests as needed. Interprets and applies findings to make a medical diagnosis.
  • Uses prescriptive authority granted by licensure to prescribe and administer routine therapeutics including medications, devices & procedures.
  • Initiates consultation requests and records required notes on all procedures or patient visits in the in the electronic medical record.
  • Participates in peer review & process improvement
  • Performs procedures that are delineated by scope of practice.
  • Provides education, consultation, and recommendations on pain strategies to patients/caregivers and other team members.
  • Participates in the development and delivery of patient education specific to chronic pain and its sequelae.
  • Demonstrates strong customer service skills.
  • Actively works with staff to maintain compliance with all regulatory standards specifically VA/DOD Chronic Opioid Therapy Clinical Practice Guidelines, VHA Pain Management Directive, Joint Commission standards on pain management
  • Maintains service workload data base, promotes QI projects. prepares reports for leadership when requested
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.
  • Current, active BLS from an entity recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Preferred Experience:
  • At least 2 years of experience providing pain management treatments, as a NP, in a hospital or clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in a consulting role as member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Pain Management Certification - The Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Nursing Services, recognizes: Credentialed Pain Practitioner (CPP) from The American Academy of Pain Management.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse II Salary Range: $88,936 to $118,284
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree. Nurse III Salary Range: $99,603 to $132,471

Physical Requirements: Standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 6 hours), stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning; repositioning patients, assisting with transfers; pushing or lifting more than 45 pounds; visual (corrected to 20/30 or better with color discrimination); auditory acuity; arms above shoulder level; neck in a fully flexed or extended position; work on computers for extended periods of time. Work is primarily conducted in a well-ventilated, adequately heated and cooled building. May be exposed to inclement weather when traveling around medical center. May be exposed to normal office irritants - dust, pollen, noise, vibrations, or odors. May be exposed to therapy animals with and without advanced notice. May be exposed to patients and family in emotional upheaval or extreme pain. Must have emotional stability to properly care for usual patient population.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
