Typical work assignments include:

  • Plan, formulate, design, construct, and install exhibits. Work with other staff members to develop themes and topics for new exhibits. Perform research and select textual, audiovisual, and museum objects for display. Arrange for loan of materials for exhibits from other institutions that will supplement and compliment the Library's holdings. Prepare or oversee preparation of exhibit catalogs, news releases, or public announcements of new exhibit openings, and general information leaflets on exhibits and museum programs.
  • Supervise managerial and administrative activities of the museum including budget, personnel, space management, procurement, and security. Set technical policies for the museum's operation.
  • Provide information about museum objects and programs to many sources including the President's family, the White House, professional museums, media, and general public. Participate in an active program of exchange of objects, ideas, and information with curators in other Presidential Libraries and private museums.
  • Oversee and/or establish and monitor system of registration and cataloging of museum objects. Revise and update the current catalog as needed to add new information about items or to document their current location or status. Annually conduct a complete inventory of all museum items that have been identified as vulnerable to theft and a sample physical inventory of museum items that are not subject to the valuable object inventory.
  • Responsible for the physical care, maintenance, preservation, and security of the museum areas and collections.Work with the building manager to upgrade, repair, or replace security systems.
  • Oversee and provide professional advice concerning rehabilitation, repair, and preservation of the museum collections. Restoration of objects which include paintings, engravings, and prints, metal, glass, leather, and ivory objects, and textiles. Negotiate with outside conservators to obtain professional restoration and repair services and works with the contracting officer to purchase the services.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
You must have a bachelor's degree in museum work or another applicable subject matter field.
OR
You must have a combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
OR
You must have four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above.

NOTE: You MUST submit copies (Unofficial copies are sufficient) of all your college transcripts at time of application to verify the education requirements are met. Graduates of foreign schools must have their academic credentials evaluated through a recognized credential evaluating institution.

In addition to the above basic requirements:

You may qualify at the GS-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirements:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service performing duties in the museum, library or exhibition management field. This experience includes: exhibit design, temporary and feature exhibit development and design, installation and programs, in addition to collections management and preservation of museum artifacts.
