This is an open continuous announcement for a Lead Range Technician (Fire)/Lead Wildland Firefighter within Utah. Open continuous announcements collect applications over the course of several months, and have multiple cut-off dates. Recruitment efforts will continue through the closing date to fill positions as they become vacant. Certificates will only be issued to the selecting officals as the need (vacancies) is identified. Applicant referrals to selecting officials will be made from among the best qualified candidates. - Serves as a lead wildland firefighter operating a wildland fire engine, performing wildland firefighting work and leading crews performing such work, i.e., wildland fire suppression and control activities including preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction, and prescribed burning.
- Drives and operates a wildland fire engine, positioning the engine for proper use and operation.
- Ensures the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch.
- Has specialized duties such as water handling specialist, fully qualified chainsaw operator, and/or responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix situations.
- Instructs crew members in specific tasks and techniques, conducts on-the-job training, distributes and controls work assignments and ensures timely accomplishment of assigned tasks, maintains work records, reports on work accomplishments, ensures the work is carried out safely, and reports on performance problems and issues.
- Supervises crew in absence of supervisor.
Passage of a pre-employment physical is required. You must also pass the work capacity test for arduous positions.
Incumbent must meet specified levels on annual physical fitness tests, and pass periodic medical exams for wildland fire personnel, commensurate with current incident management qualifications.
This position may require regular and recurring overtime and shift work during fire season.
Government facilities are required to provide a smoke free environment for their employees. Smoking will be permitted only in designated areas.
You must be 18 years of age or older to be assigned to a hazardous position.
You must possess and maintain a valid automobile driver's license.
THIS IS A DRUG TESTING DESIGNATED POSITION in accordance with Executive Order 12564, and under the Department’s Drug Free Workplace Program. Applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use and to pass the test prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

Physical Demands: Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance, and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of heavy items.
Work Environment: Work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions.
Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

The Bureau of Land Management has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework.
This is a primary firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The position is subject to maximum entry age (MEA) requirements.
The MEA for this position shall not exceed age 37; unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement.
