Help

As a DIGITAL IMAGING TECHNICIAN, GS-1001-6, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:

  • Technician will operate one or more digitizing devices to capture raster image files of a range of materials, including loose and bound paper documents of all sizes, photographic prints and film, and three dimensional objects. Digitizing equipment may include automated document scanners, flatbed scanners, digital cameras, digital copy camera systems and film scanners.
  • The technician will submit image files to automated image processing applications or may perform basic, predefined image processing to individual applications or may perform basic, predefined image processing to individual files. You will insert supplied metadata into software tools or into image files directly. The tasks assigned will range from routine, predictable operations to more complex or nonstandard processes. These task will be carried out in accordance with the specifications, policies, and procedures of the National Archives and Records Administration and the Federal government, as well as any applicable industry standards. The technician will perform ongoing checks of their work as well as the work of others to confirm lab standards are being maintained. The technician will use Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems to navigate file directories, organize files, connect to other computer systems, and interact with software tools. The technician will use a variety of software applications to operate digitizing equipment, process image files, conduct quality checks, enter data, communicate with colleagues, and submit administrative information.
  • The technician will clean and maintain work areas and perform general operational maintenance of equipment. In addition, the technician will perform preventive maintenance on equipment and software, as well as conduct basic problem diagnosis. In carrying out tasks, the technician will use good manual dexterity to safely handle a variety of materials that range in condition and value.
  • The technician will assist less experienced staff carry out their duties by providing guidance and informal training. The technician will have limited responsibility for individual, standard jobs.

Time-in-Grade: Time-in-grade requirements apply. You must have one year of Federal service at the GS-05 level to be eligible for the GS-06.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-06 level, if you fulfill one of the following qualification requirements:

GS-06 - Candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled.

Examples of specialized experience for this grade level include: Operating one or more digitizing devices such as automated document scanners, flatbed scanners, digital cameras, digital copy camera systems or film scanners. Preparing a variety of documents for digital scanning; reviewing converted electronic documents for quality assurance; use of a variety of software applications to operate digitizing equipment, process image files.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
