As the PUBLIC PROGRAMS OFFICER, GS-0301-12, your typical work assignments may include the following:
Plans, schedules, and conducts a variety of formal and informal museum public programs; promotes and advertises these programs which includes special events; disseminates public information and manages public relations. Programs may include an individual event or a series of events on subject matter suitable to the mission of the Truman Library. Manages and directs museum programs that involve and are related to services provided for clients and event guests to the Library special event program. These responsibilities include: representation of Library spaces to Museum clients, contractors, and vendors; management of the planning and coordination of events sponsored by the Library and the Library Institute; evaluation of sponsorship requests to advise the Library Director; and oversight of the master calendar of events and spaces.
Manages activities related to, and services provided for, visitors to the Library's museum/exhibit program and for visitors for museum and public programs. Monitors visitor satisfaction and supervises the Library's response and reaction to visitor complaints and commendations. Oversees operation of the museum admissions and gift shop services. Works cooperatively with leadership team of the Library, Institute staff, and tourism bureaus. Supervises the Library's volunteer coordinator; directs the recruitment, training, assignment, and evaluation of volunteers so that these resources may contribute most effectively to the work of the Library on a broad front; and oversees the promotional, policy, procedural, and recognition materials and activities necessary for effective volunteer programs.
Manages the content of the visitor services and facility rentals portion of the Library's website. Coordinates Library activities that promote or describe the Library's operations and services through paid or pro-bono advertising, through media relations, through the website, and through relations with community organizations. Works in close cooperation with public relations and marketing personnel of the Harry S. Truman Library Institute. Writes or edits and is responsible for the design of all materials issued or published by or for the Library including brochures, flyers, newsletters, calendars of events, advertising rack cards, etc. Coordinates the Library's tourism promotion program at local, regional, and national levels, representing the Library on tourism councils.
Manages Library employees in the planning, implementation and maintenance of special and on-going programs, visitor services (admissions and gift shop) operations, and events; and performs the full range of supervisory duties.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which has included such activities as developing content for museum and/or public programs (e.g., symposia, lectures, performances, conferences); managing logistics (e.g., scheduling, booking travel arrangements, security, crowd control, use of facilities/space) for museum programs; researching and compiling audience appropriate materials (e.g., brochures, information leaflets, event calendars, event programs, etc.) for in-person, offsite, or online presentation; having had audience-appropriate materials edited and published for larger audience (e.g., in a magazine, as a visitor guide for an institution, etc); reviewing and/or evaluating the effectiveness of museum and/or public programs; developing and maintaining partnerships to further the reach of museum and/or public programs.
