The VALOR program requires a minimum of 400 consecutive hours during the summer months. The VALOR student may continue in the program - pending funding, on a part-time basis during the senior academic year. The total residency appointment is 800 hours (including the summer appointment).
Students will be paid at a salary rate equal to 80 percent of the local VA facility's annual salary rate for a Nurse I, Level 1, Step 1.
The duty station is the VA Portland Health Care system, Portland Oregon; however, the duty station may be changed to one or multiple associated VAMC locations within the VA Portland Health Care system area based on the needs of the medical center.
This is a time-limited, intermittent position within VA Portland Health Care system. VALOR Nursing Student Residency Program
The The VALOR nursing student is responsible to the individual unit nurse manager. Nursing care is provided under the direct supervision and guidance of their assigned RN preceptor. The incumbent is under the supervision of a Nurse Manager or other immediate supervisor who provides the administrative supervision and general instruction, plans and assigns work , assigns time schedules, approves leave, and completes performance evaluations. Clinical supervision is provided by a registered nurse, physician, or other provider. Incumbent is responsible for being self directed in the delivery of patient care under moderate to close supervision and instruction by the supervisor.
The VALOR student, under the direct supervision of a VA registered nurse preceptor is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing direct patient care. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs.
The VALOR is a student nurse who delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned Veterans while developing the technical competencies required for the specific practice setting under the direct supervision of an RN preceptor. The VALOR student begins in an observational mode with an RN preceptor and gradually, as they and their preceptor assess their abilities and comfort levels, the student assumes greater levels of responsibility. This guided and mentored experience is intended to strengthen confidence, critical thinking abilities, time management skills, and prioritization and delegation of care. The VALOR student must work with their preceptor and nurse manger to identify and select a leadership project that meets the needs of VAPORHCS as well as affording the student an opportunity to develop leadership skills. The VALOR student is expected to attend staff meetings and unit based, as well as, facility wide educational offerings. The practice of each VALOR nursing student is based on skill, experience, and research and has a direct and indirect impact on Veteran outcomes for the assigned area and the Health Care System as a whole.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy lifting (45+ lbs.), moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs.), moderate carrying (15 - 44 lbs.), straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordinating simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16", far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, ability to distinguish basic and shades of color, and emotional/mental stability.
The Physical requirements of this position include the following tasks which may be performed intermittently: lifting of up to 50 lbs. 5. Be currently enrolled in an ACEN or CCNE accredited BSN program.
6. Pass a pre-employment physical examination (provided by VA) at the time of entry in the Nursing VALOR Program. Students who furnish evidence of satisfactory physical condition based on a physical examination within the past 12 months will not be required to have a pre-employment physical examination. Evidence of PPD testing will also be required or testing will be done on station prior to arrival on unit.
7. Have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, with no grade lower than a B in any nursing course.
8. Be willing to work a minimum of one day per month when school starts, if additional funding is received
