Shenandoah National Park is located in Virginia, approximately 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The park consists of approximately 197,000 acres of land, including 80,000 acres designated as wilderness. It also contains 105 miles of Skyline Drive and 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Annual visitation is around 1.1 million, which has direct and extensive economic impact on the surrounding area (eight counties and nine municipalities). The park's natural, cultural and recreational resources are of vital interest to local and regional businesses, political leaders, conservation and outdoor recreation organizations, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The park is recruiting for full-time and part-time positions with the majority of the positions being hired as full-time with 1-2 positions hired as part-time. Estimated hours for part-time work will be 16 hours per week. May be assigned to work nights, early mornings, rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends. Lieu days may periodically change based on seasonal visitation patterns.

Major duties will be to prepare and present thematic interpretive programs for a variety of public audiences and curriculum-based education programs for kindergarten through high school student groups on a variety of natural and human history topics including habitats, plant/animal adaptations, ecosystems, geology, human history, park management and watersheds. Public interpretive programs include guided walks, short talks, illustrated evening programs and children's programs. Programs are resource-based and are conducted at outdoor and indoor sites at various locations in the park and use the professional competency standards developed by the National Park Service. Perform other interpretive duties including visitor center operations and roving interpretive patrols making informal visitor contacts. Assist with preparing and presenting special request programs and sessions for instructional teacher workshops and professional development courses for educators. These positions are in Shenandoah National Park with the Division of Interpretation and Education, with duty stations at various locations along Skyline Drive. Park Headquarters Complex is located approximately 4 miles from Luray, Virginia, a small rural community in the Shenandoah Valley.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
Employees will obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification.
Applicants must possess a valid state driver's license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. As a condition of employment, you will be required to submit a completed GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Your employment, after your tentative selection, will be contingent upon receipt of these documents in a timely manner and that those documents establish, to the satisfaction of the selecting official, that you possess a valid driver's license.

Quality Ranking Factor: Interpretation Certification
Knowledge of the professional standards of interpretation demonstrated through National Park Service (NPS) Interpretive Development Program, Eppley Institute for Parks and Public Lands online interpretive training courses, National Association for Interpretation (NAI) courses or other accredited university/college coursework in interpretation is preferred. Applicants who have obtained certification in any of the previous courses is preferred. (Be sure to list and describe all courses completed in your application package.)
For the GS-05 grade level
A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. -OR- B. A 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work. One year of full time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. -OR- C. Equivalent combinations of education and experience.
For the GS-07 grade level
A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader, work in a park, recreation or conservation area, environmental education, history and/or cultural resources education, and natural sciences education. Work will include independent research and presentation. -OR- B. You must possess one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation. One year of full time graduate education is defined as 18 semester hours. -OR- C. Equivalent combinations of education and experience.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. In order to receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the number of hours worked per week.
Credit for experience is given on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.
