The Minneapolis VA Healthcare System (MVAHCS) is recruiting for a Physician Assistant to work at the Chippewa Falls Community Based Outreach Clinic (CBOC). As an agent of the collaborating physician, the Physician Assistant (PA) is authorized to write medical orders on patients assigned to him/her for care. Every order given by the PA is considered as coming from the collaborating physician or alternate. All orders written by the PA will be within the parameters of this scope of practice agreement. Orders, progress notes, consultation requests, reports of histories and physical examinations written or dictated by the PA will clearly identify him/her as a physician assistant. The CBOC clinic utilizes the Patient Aligned Care Team model which is similar to the Medical Home model of care to provide services to the veteran population. This care model utilizes advance clinic access principles and chronic disease management tools when caring for the adult veteran population.
Scope of Practice Core Elements
The PA is authorized to perform the following tasks on a regular and ongoing basis for the care of the Primary Care patient assigned to the PA and veterans enrolled in the VA Health Care System. These duties may be performed without specific prior discussion with the collaborating physician:
· Obtaining medical histories and performing physical examinations.
· Documenting progress notes and summaries in the patient record, and writing patient orders on assigned patients.
· Providing and coordinating medical care for assigned patients in the primary care setting, including establishing diagnoses, formulating and implementing care plans, and providing follow-up care.
· Evaluating outpatients to determine the need for further health care and refer accordingly.
· Ordering diagnostic studies and other special tests, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Computerized Tomography (CT) scans, etc.
· Carrying out health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education activities according to CDC and VA guidelines.
· Ordering or obtaining laboratory specimens.
· Ordering ancillary services such as pharmacy, social services, physical medicine and rehabilitation therapies, prosthetic services, etc.
· Ordering VA specialty service consults and initiating requests for non-VA medical care and consults in accordance with VHA and MVAHCS policy and procedures.
· Ordering patient care supplies.
· Writing orders for, or prescribing medications.
· Providing education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
· Performing minor procedures such as suturing, simple dermatology procedures and joint injections based on competency validation

Education or Training: The candidate must meet one of the following:
(1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and
(2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Certification: Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.
English Language Proficiency: PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
Restriction: Under no circumstances may this occupation be used to employ physicians or other health care providers who do not meet the applicable qualification standards for their occupation. All physician assistants must meet the requirements above.
