As an Industrial Hygienist, you will serve as a technical expert in industrial hygiene for the agency responsible for providing expert advice to field offices and agencies within the region.

This position can be filled at any GSA duty location in the Southeast Sunbelt Region (R4) within Atlanta, GA or any Region 4 Field Office location (AL, FL, GA, KY, MS, NC, SC, TN). The incumbent will be expected to report to a GSA facility in the Southeast Sunbelt Region at least 2x per pay period

As an Industrial Hygienist, you will:

  • Serve as a technical expert in industrial hygiene for the agency
  • Responsible for providing expert advice to field offices and agencies within the region.  
  • Responsible for the quality control of the industrial hygiene elements of Safety and Environmental Management programs.
  • Serve as the regional focal point and provide management, regional officials, other program or project managers within the agency, other Government agencies, contract service firms, and contract architect and engineering firms with highly technical judgment concerning industrial hygiene and exposure risk management where the situations encountered are frequently without precedent. 
  • Keep current with the latest developments in industrial hygiene and related disciplines by reviewing technical publications, attending technical conferences or professional society meetings, and discussions with industry representatives in which discussions are of national significance or are of outstanding importance to the Agency.  
  • Evaluate new technology and recommend adoption of those that would improve efficiency and risk management.

This position has job functions that must be executed within specific geographic locations. The official duty station is a federal facility, leased space, or an alternative worksite (typically the employee’s home) within the specified geographic area. If you are selected for this position, you will be expected to report to the duty station listed on this announcement within 45 days. At that time, you may be eligible to request to telework one or more days a pay period depending upon the terms of the agency’s telework policy.

If selected, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Current or Former Political Appointees: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C or Non­Career SES employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the HR Office. Failure to disclose this information could result in disciplinary action including removal from Federal Service.
  • Serve a one year probationary period, if required.
  • Undergo and pass a background investigation (Tier 2 investigation level).
  • Have your identity and work status eligibility verified if you are not a GSA employee.  We will use the Department of Homeland Security’s e-Verify system for this. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of continued employment.
  • Most work is performed in an office setting. Frequent travel for short duration is required. Work at a building site may involve moderate risks or discomfort due to high levels of noise and vibrations, dust and grease, and operating machinery. Special safety precautions are required at construction sites and the incumbent may be required to use protective devices such as goggles, gloves, respirators, safety shoes, hard hats or other personal protective equipment. Employee is subject to a medical surveillance program.

The GS-13 salary range starts at $103,409 per year and varies by location. If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.  

To qualify, you must meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements below.

1. A bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; OR

2. A bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; OR

3. Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

In addition to the basic requirements stated above, applicants must meet specialized experience requirements, in order to be qualified for this position. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-12 level independently conducting surveys/inspections based upon compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations including on-site federally-owned and leased space, and environmental sampling (quantitative and qualitative) in order to evaluate chemical, physical, biological or mechanical (HVAC systems) stresses; and preparing written reports based upon the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers. Such experience must also include development of recommendations encompassing engineering, administrative or personal controls with special emphasis on asbestos control, abatement and monitoring.

  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices to serve as technical authority and provide expert advice on a broad range of industrial hygiene matters.
  • Knowledge required to evaluate testing laboratories to assure they are adequately staffed and qualified to process data in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Knowledge required to research technical publications and develop instructions, regional specifications, and field manual guides for the use of agency personnel.
  • Skill in identifying, evaluating, and recommending control measures for any type of health hazard to which workers are exposed.
