Help

This position has job functions that must be executed within specific geographic locations. The official duty station is a federal facility, leased space, or an alternative worksite (typically the employee’s home) within the specified geographic area. If you are selected for this position, you will be expected to report to the duty station listed on this announcement within 45 days. At that time, you may be eligible to request to telework one or more days a pay period depending upon the terms of the agency’s telework policy. The duty station will be determined upon selection and must be a physical address (not a PO Box) located within approximately a 50 miles radius of the geographic areas listed/described.

As an Accounting Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Processes various accounting related transactions and performs related research in applicable automated systems using different and varied technical processes. Makes appropriate corrections/adjustments as needed or directed.
  • Plans and performs a broad range of accounting support work assignments including, but not limited to, monitoring various reports and taking the necessary corrective action to clear outstanding items from
    these reports; identifying and resolving problems and deviations; answering technical accounting related questions and inquiries; making determinations on technical support accounting actions, situations and
    issues and taking proper action.

  • Reviews transactions rejected by various automated systems, including system generated entries. Determines the reasons for the rejection, and takes corrective action or refers problem to the accountant,
    and/or supervisor. When problems become recurring, recommend changes in procedures. This includes providing information about system problems to higher graded personnel.

  • Provides information and data relating to accounting support functions; working independently and determining the types and sources of information needed to complete technical support assignments.
    Assistance will be provided for assignments that are complex and diverse.  
  • Provides and extends accurate customer service in a timely and courteous manner when initiating responding to telephone calls or e-mails, receiving visitors, and responding to and interacting with all
    customers. Prepares correspondence to customers as related to areas of responsibility.

If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.  

The GS-08 salary range starts at $55,143 per year. Locality will be determined based on the duty location. 

To qualify, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level or higher in the Federal service.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Specialized experience is experience performing a broad range of accounting support work assignments. Experience must include resolving problems and deviations. Reviewing and providing analysis transactions from various automated systems. Provide customer support and answering technical accounting related questions and inquiries.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

You will be evaluated on the questions you answer during the application process, which will measure your overall possession of the following competencies or knowledge, skills, and abilities. Your responses to these questions must be supported by your resume or your score may be lowered.

  • Thorough knowledge of administrative, accounting and financial regulations, laws, practices, policies and procedures related to the various program functions.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of applicable systems, software applications, terminology, account code structure, general ledger accounts and input necessary to process items correctly in an integrated financial accounting system.
  • Thorough knowledge of program requirements to perform a variety of technical support work assignments and ability to choose a course of action and make determinations to perform day-to-day, special assignments.
  • Thorough knowledge of the characteristics and use of source documents and associated data, and their relationship to specific accounts to verify, research and correct variances.
  • Thorough knowledge of processing cycles and subsystems within the overall systems to permit tracing transaction discrepancies and documenting corrections.
  • Thorough knowledge of extensive and diverse operations governing a wide variety and types of related transactions in order to resolve nonstandard transactions, complaints/discrepancies and to provide advice or perform other work that requires procedural knowledge.
  • Knowledge to perform exhaustive searches for required information, discrepancies, adjustments, accounting histories, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of balancing routines.
  • Ability to coordinate work assignments with other Branch personnel.
  • Knowledge of the GSA organizational structure.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Additional hurdle assessments, such as narrative responses or other assessments, may be administered to applicants who meet the requirements of the first hurdle, e.g., the minimum qualification requirements. If additional assessments are used, you will be provided with further instructions.
