Summary

The position is an entry-level Airway Transportation Systems Specialist (ATSS). All duties of an ATSS are tied to maintaining safe and efficient operating capacity of the vast and complex network or electronics systems required for the world's largest air traffic control and navigation system. ATSS personnel install, evaluate, maintain, modify and certify facilities, services and equipment that support the National Airspace System (NAS). These are not remote or 100% telework positions

Help

Responsibilities include, but not limited to the following:

At this level, the ATSS performs basic, progressively more difficult assignments, receives academic and on-the-job instruction in fundamentals of the appropriate discipline, acquires and applies basic technical knowledge and limited experience to accomplish assignments.

These responsibilities are associated with acquiring basic knowledge and hands-on experience leading to the ability to perform coordination, operation, repair, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, modification, flight check, certification, and documentation activities on all or some of the following discipline specific systems and services such as:

Environmental: Lighted Navigational Aids Systems, Industrial Heating, Power-Conditioning Systems, etc.

Radar: Terminal Doppler Weather Radar, Airport Surveillance Radar, Identified Friend or Foe, etc.

Navigational Aids: Instrument Landing Systems, Distance Measuring Equipment, Very High Frequency Omni Directional Ranges, etc.

Communications: UHF/VHF/SATCOM, Voice Switches, Link Repeaters, etc.

Automation: Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System, Flight Data Input/Output, various display systems and maintenance of industrial computer systems, etc.

The ATSS should have a foundation of basic knowledge supplemented by work experience or formal education in order to perform in this position such as: knowledge of basic electronic and/or electrical theory; have the aptitude for solving mathematical problems (algebra and/or trigonometry to perform electronic/electrical calculations); read and interpret technical drawings; and apply basic physics theory. The developmental ATSS must use electronic test equipment required for maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing of NAS equipment/systems as well as use proper personal protective equipment and safety procedures while accomplishing work assignments.

Many ATSS's work out of offices located at or near airports and on service equipment located on airports, in Air Traffic Control Towers, other remote facilities and in open fields, or even on remote mountain tops. It is often necessary to drive significant distances (100-200 miles) to reach facilities. ATSS's also work in Air Route Traffic Control Centers maintaining equipment within the facility. You must be able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position without hazard to yourself or others. Depending on the position, usable vision (including color vision and near vision), hearing, and speech may be required. You may also be required to lift and/or carry objects of about 20 to 50 pounds, as well as climb ladders and/or work in unusual or uncomfortable body positions or environmental conditions. Some ATSS's may be required to travel away from home up to 80% of the time. Some positions involve work that must be performed outdoors during various weather conditions. Most positions involve rotating shifts and weekend and holiday work.

QUALIFICATIONS AT THE FV-F LEVEL BASED ON WORK EXPERIENCE:

To be QUALIFIED: Applicants must document 3 years of full time (40 hours per week) general work experience that provided a basic knowledge of the principles of electronics, mathematics, computers, aeronautics, or related areas, or an understanding, both theoretical and practical, of automated systems operation, integration, management, and maintenance. Experience may have been gained in occupations such as computer specialist, electronics technician, telecommunications specialist, engineer, or other work related to this position.

To be WELL QUALIFIED: Applicant must document 1 year of full time (40 hours per week) more specialized work experience that provided the opportunity to acquire and the need to apply practical and theoretical knowledge of the principles, functions, and processes associated with electronics and electricity concepts; computer systems and information management concepts; telecommunications concepts; and system management and integration methods related to the ATSS discipline specific systems and services.

QUALIFICATIONS AT THE FV-F LEVEL BASED ON EDUCATION:

To be QUALIFIED: Applicants must document a 4-year course of study or at least 24 semester hours leading to a Bachelor's degree in one of these fields: computer science, mathematics, electronics, physical sciences, information management, engineering, telecommunications, or other fields related to this position. Schools must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If qualifying based on education, applicants must submit a copy of the transcript which includes the name of the institution, quarter or semester hours earned and/or confer date.

QUALIFICATIONS AT THE FV-F LEVEL BASED ON A COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be qualifying for this position. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify.

Valid Driver's License is required.

FV-F KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

-Knowledge of basic electronics theory and/or basic electro-mechanical theory.

-Basic knowledge of electronic test equipment commonly used to align, adjust and maintain electronic and/or mechanical equipment/ systems.

-Basic knowledge of troubleshooting and repairing electronic and/or mechanical equipment/systems.

-Ability to apply basic knowledge of electronics and/or electro-mechanical theory to troubleshoot and diagnose/repair electronic and/ or electro-mechanical equipment/systems.

Education
