Summary

The purpose of the Writer/Editor position is to perform writing and editing work related to the communication of ODEP policies, programs and activities to targeted audiences, employees, workers and the general public.

Duties

Help

Major duties for the GS-13 at the full performance level:

  • Provides editing and writing support for all ODEP informational material and publications. Provides technical guidance to ODEP Staff.
  • Serves as a liaison for all Information Campaigns and Media Interactions. Plays a key role in speaker request management across ODEP including keeping track of all incoming internal and external requests for the Assistant Secretary, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Chief of Staff and ODEP staff members.
  • Coordinates and monitors standard format for all ODEP correspondence, publications, and other materials generated by ODEP, and disseminates the templates to appropriate staff; edits and maintains documents as necessary, including ODEP Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Consults with the Division Supervisor and other appropriate ODEP staff to monitor and maintain an acceptable level of ODEP publications inventory. Serves as a senior team member for all ODEP written products. Oversees the development efforts and provides technical guidance of all new publications.
  • Edits, reviews and proofreads all ODEP publications (i.e., website and correspondence) for adherence to current ODEP policy, tone and appropriate style. Edits and writes other materials as needed for ODEP. Incumbent edits, reviews and proofreads policy drafts from policy team before submission for clearance.
  • Develops and implements methods and techniques for achieving communication goals through news releases, radio, television, and public service announcement scripts, feature articles, personal appearances, news conferences, exhibits, brochures, pamphlets, etc. Incumbent actively participates in special assignments to further the strategic goals of ODEP.

Qualifications

You must meet the Basic Requirements listed in the "Education Requirements" section and the "Specialized Experience" to qualify for Writer-Editor, as described below.
For GS-13: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level for GS-12 in the Federal Service.

Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

Qualifying specialized experience for the GS-13 includes meeting 3 of the 5, listed below:

  • Experience developing, writing, and editing materials that are published in the public domain, while setting priorities and adhering to strict timelines.
  • Experience reviewing work of others for grammatical correctness, clarity, appropriate reading level, and consistency with regulations and style and format requirements.
  • Experience producing and disseminating Web content, providing policy, editorial, and technical guidance.
  • Experience monitoring web output for accuracy and appropriateness for intended audiences and adherence to agency guidelines for content and style.
  • Experience reviewing material for clarity and for consistency with the agency's policies and style requirements.

This position is inside the bargaining unit. If the duty location is within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the position will be included in the Local 12, AFGE bargaining unit. If the duty location is outside the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the position will be included in the NCFLL bargaining unit.

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of time-in-grade (52 weeks at the next lower grade), time-after-competitive-appointment (90 days), and minimum qualifications (52 weeks equivalent to the next lower grade in federal service). These requirements must be met within 30 days of 07/05/2023, the announcement closing date.

Full Promotion Potential (if applicable): This position is at the Full-Performance Level (FPL).
