The Asylum Division within USCIS is responsible for interviewing asylum seekers to determine whether they qualify for protection in the United States due to persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. These determinations are made while protecting national security, combating fraud, and protecting the legal immigration system through careful screening, vigilant interviews, and sound adjudications. Every day, Asylum Officers change lives while ensuring the integrity of our country's immigration system.

GS-09: You qualify at the GS-09 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is administered by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). This program is for recent graduates with an advanced degree-either a professional or graduate degree such as a master's, Ph.D. or J.D. Individuals are eligible under this program if they: have completed an advanced degree from a qualifying educational institution or program within the past two years; or, are a current graduate student who will meet the advanced degree requirements by August 31 of the year following the annual application announcement. The Office of Personnel Management announces the opportunity to apply for the PMF Program usually in the late summer or early fall, on the PMF and USAJOBS websites. This program Applicants for this program go through a rigorous assessment process to determine Finalists. The list of PMF Finalists is published on the PMF website early in the calendar year that follows OPM's PMF Program announcement. PMF Finalists have up to 12 months from selection (as a PMF Finalist) to accept and start an appointment as a Presidential Management Fellow (PMF). As a Presidential Management Fellow at the GS-09 grade level, a Master's Degree is required and must be from accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications (particularly positions with a positive education requirement).

Training: If you have not already done so, you will be required to attend and complete a USCIS Officer training course.
