Duties

Help

As a Fish Biologist your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Identifies, develops, coordinates, and implements fish passage and other habitat restoration projects at the watershed scale. Projects are often complex and require the development of highly specialized on-site solutions. Identifies and obtains project funding from sources such as the Service's National Fish Passage and Partners for Fish and Wildlife programs, and other Federal and State agencies and programs.
  • Cooperatively develops projects with local watershed groups and non-profits, and coordinates activities with other agencies, organizations, consultants, and landowners on fish passage and other habitat restoration issues. This includes the development and management of grants and cooperative agreements to carry out habitat restoration projects and other activities.
  • Conducts complex fishery analyses, prepares and reviews comments and documents pertaining to hydropower project effects on fish and fishery resources in the Klamath Basin.
  • Meets with outside entities and presents and explains Service programs, policies, positions, recommendations, etc.
  • Ensures that all required State, Federal, and local permitting requirements for fish passage and other restoration projects at Yreka Fish and Wildlife Office are met. Also ensures Service responsibilities under the Federal Power Act, Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act, and the U.S. Endangered Species Act for listed and candidate species are met.
  • Enters information into internal program databases, manages multiple-year databases, and compiles statistics to generate reports concerning various studies, projects, biological investigations, etc.
  • Provides guidance and technical assistance on salmon biology and habitat issues to other Federal, State, Tribes, and private interests as well as to other biologists within the Field Office.
  • Assists supervisor in developing information for annual budgets and work plans, and other management documents and reports.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 04/03/2023 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

Basic Requirement:

  1. A bachelor's or higher degree with a major in biological science that included (1) at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology, AND (2) at least 12 semester hours in animal science subjects such as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess coursework in aquatic subjects may be used to satisfy the animal science coursework requirement when appropriate.). OR
  2. A combination of education and experience that includes coursework equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown in A above, PLUS appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of my combination of education and experience is sufficient to demonstrate that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities comparable to those normally acquired through the successful completion of a full four-year course of study.

Minimum Qualification [GS-9]
  1. One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-7 in the Federal service. Experience may include conducting studies affecting fish and aquatic species populations; assisting in fisheries, aquatic species and habitat management project implementation; compiling and summarizing data; and preparing and presenting scientific data and reports relative to fishery resources. OR
  2. Two years of progressively higher-level graduate-level education leading to a master's degree OR a master's or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in or directly related to fisheries and/or aquatics. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement.

Minimum Qualification [GS-11]
  1. One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-9 in the Federal service. Experience may include providing planning support for biological and/or environmental initiatives related to the management of fish and aquatic resources; conducting studies affecting fish and aquatic species populations and performing data and statistical analysis; assisting in fisheries, aquatic species and habitat management planning and project implementation; preparing and presenting scientific data relative to fishery resources; and experience working in partnerships to achieve aquatic species population and environmental objectives. OR
  2. Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D., or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, in or directly related to fisheries and/or aquatics. OR
  3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement.
