The Department of Perioperative Medicine is seeking to fill an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Anesthetist) position. The ideal candidate for the Nurse Anesthetist will possess the following: Graduate of a Nurse Anesthesia education program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs (COA) and have passed the certification examination administered by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.

Duties

As a GS-0610-13 Nurse Anesthetist, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Administering anesthesia for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures undertaken in operating rooms as well as satellite locations including MRI suites, radiology, and medical and surgical intensive care units.
  • Administering all types of anesthesia for patients of all ages undergoing minor or complex surgical or diagnostic procedures.
  • Performing and documenting pre-anesthetic nursing assessments and evaluations of patients.
  • Setting up appropriate anesthetic equipment, sterile trays, drugs, materials and solutions required and anticipating the need for operating table attachments, monitoring devices, blood transfusion accessories, and other special equipment.
  • Implementing corrective measures for intraoperative anesthesia complications by providing airway management, administration of fluids and medications, using basic and advanced cardiac life support techniques, and communicating emergent events with the responsible anesthesiologist.
  • Assessing post-anesthesia follow-up status, including pain management as determined by responsible anesthesiologist.

  • The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as recurring bending, walking, lifting or moving patients and/or equipment weighing over 50 pounds.
  • Other physical demands include kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, stooping, typing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • The work also requires assistance in moving patients or equipment weighing more than 50 pounds. The care of highly emotional or irrational patients may be required.

Qualifications

You meet the basic qualification requirements for this Nurse Anesthetist position if you:

Possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position (Anesthesia). NOTE: Degree from a Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools;

AND

Have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN);

AND

Possess a current, active, full and unrestricted license, or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.

Additional qualification requirements for the GS-0610-13:

You must have at least 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks:
Collecting research data per protocol; administering general, regional and monitored anesthesia; detecting and treating unfavorable reactions to anesthetics and other agents; operating and maintaining state-of-the art anesthesia equipment and techniques; preparing reports, presentations and classes for health professionals; applying laws and regulations concerning patient's rights and privacy, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 and Privacy Act.

You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.

  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position and the selected candidate will be considered an "emergency essential" employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances (e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapses in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations) for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.
  • A newly appointed or reappointed employee may receive service credit for prior work experience or active duty uniformed service that otherwise would not be creditable for the purpose of determining his or her annual leave accrual rate. All creditable service must be directly related to the duties of the position being filled and decisions to allow for such credit must be finalized prior to the selectee's entrance on duty. Recipients will be determined on a case-by-case basis based on organizational need, specific case justification, and budget limitations.

  • The position is located in a hospital environment where there is a risk of exposure to infectious diseases, radioactive materials, electrical hazards, irritant chemicals, construction noise, and/or explosive gases. Exposure to such materials may result in long range effects to health.
  • CRNA's will be graduates of an American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) approved training program and will have licensure in one of the 50 states of the United States of America or the District of Columbia. You will be responsible for acquiring all continuing education credits necessary to maintain your licensure. You must be an ACLS and BCLS provider.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.
