As an IT Specialist (InfoSec) GS-2210-9/11, your typical work assignments may include the following:

  • Configures, monitors, and reports on the Division vulnerability scanning solution and relevant alerts. Assesses applications, operating systems, and network security events including latest updates, security patches, and firmware to determine impact and corrective action.
  • Conducts risk and vulnerability assessments of planned and installed information systems to identify vulnerabilities, risks, and protection needs.
  • Contributes to the development of Division policies and procedures to ensure information systems reliability, availability and accessibility.
  • Serves as advisor to the Division users and adheres to system security policies and procedures.

Pursuant to the Federal Cybersecurity Workforce Assessment Act of 2015, the following work roles have been identified as relevant to this position, under the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Framework:
  • Oversees the cybersecurity program of an information system or network; Management including managing information security implications within the organization, specific program, or other area of responsibility, to include strategic, personnel, infrastructure, requirements, policy enforcement, emergency planning, security awareness, and other resources.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of IT SPECIALIST (INFOSEC) - DIRECT HIRING AUTHORITY at the GS-2210-9/11 grade level, you must possess the basic qualification requirement specific to this series and grade:

For all 2210 positions, individuals must demonstrate they have experience in each of the four competencies listed below:Experience must be IT related; the experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate.

  1. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  2. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
-AND possess the required specialized experience specific to this series and grade.

To qualify at the GS-09 grade level you must possess the following:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 or higher grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include:
  • Assisting with identifying security weaknesses;
  • Identifying and/or resolving basic IT issues and problems;
  • Assisting with analyzing security breeches; and
  • Gathering information regarding systems security requirements.
OR- Have a Master's or equivalent graduate degree -or- two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree, if related. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

OR- Have a combination of both specialized experience and graduate education described above. (Only graduate education in excess of the first full year may be used in this calculation.)

To qualify at the GS-11 grade level you must possess the following:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 or higher grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience include:
  • Identifying security vulnerabilities, and determining alternative solutions;
  • Assessing and authorizing IT security systems;
  • Evaluating vulnerability scanning tool, IT auditing tools, and/or related techniques; and
  • Working with stakeholders to gather information regarding systems security requirements.
OR- Have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree -or- three (3) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

OR- Have a combination of both specialized experience and relevant graduate education that, when combined, is equivalent to 100% of the minimum qualification requirement.
