REGISTERED NURSE- Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Lab
There are three full-time positions for a Cardiac Cath/EP RN at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center. The Cardiac Catherization and Electrophysiology Labs are an integral part of the Cardiology Department within the Medicine Division. The selected incumbent will provide nursing care to patients undergoing invasive diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac procedures (both emergent and non-emergent) in both labs. This is a modified day shift position, Monday through Friday with required on-call (including holidays and weekends) and flexible scheduling to accommodate the needs of the unit/procedure schedule. All staff are required to be on-call (on a rotating schedule) and therefore must reside a maximum of 30 minutes' drive time from the Milwaukee VA Hospital to meet the call-schedule requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Function with a high degree of teamwork, utilize critical thinking, and demonstrate exceptional communication skills with all intra- and interdisciplinary partners.
  • Provide complex nursing care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs of critically ill patients including those requiring mechanical ventilation.
  • Aseptically prepare patient and the surgical field, select required instruments, catheters, guide wires and ancillary equipment necessary for the prescribed procedure. Preps and drapes patient according to protocol; assist in maintaining sterile field, helping with catheter exchanges, injections, and balloon dilatation.
  • Provide venous access via initiation of an intravenous (IV) line
  • Prepare and administer medications (including those given for moderate sedation) as directed by the physician for all emergent and non-emergent procedures in the Cath and EP Labs and/or for transesophageal echo's (TEE) and Dobutamine stress tests.
  • Assist in monitoring hemodynamic support equipment and ECG monitoring of the patient
  • Cares for patients requiring invasive hemodynamic support equipment to include an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) or an Impella.
  • Utilize the appropriate computer program to acquire, reconstruct and analyze data; utilize peripheral devices (digital imaging, and video formatters) to quantitate coronary lesions and to generate ventricular analysis reports, cardiac output, gradients, valve areas and other diagnostic parameters.
  • Removes arterial and venous sheaths and achieves effective hemostasis.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Required:
  • ACLS Certification
  • Must have physical capabilities to initiate crisis intervention measures and the ability and knowledge to perform in nursing care emergencies.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to utilize the nursing process in managing acute and/or emergent patient care situations
  • Must demonstrate skills in managing moderate sedation and monitoring critically ill patients during procedures.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills and tact in dealing with patients, families, and staff.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as a team to meet the needs of both the patient and the unit.
  • Must be able to work with a high level of flexibility/adaptability.
Preferred Experience:
  • BSN
  • Cardiac Catherization and Electrophysiology experience
  • Registered Nurse with a minimum of 2-years' experience in ICU, ER, Cardiac Catheterization/Electrophysiology Lab, or other critical care area
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting and/or standing while wearing a lead apron..
