Summary

The Veterans Healthcare Administration (VHA) Travel Nurse Corp Program is recruiting Nurse Practioners to support Occupation Health and Primary Care needs for Health Care Systems across the Nation. The primary purpose of the Nurse Practitioner is to practice to the full extent of their education, training, and certification, without the clinical supervisor or mandatory collaboration of physicians, as a licensed practitioner in an Occupational Health and/or Primary Care setting.

The VA Travel Nurse Corps, a segment of the Veterans Health Administration Office, is seeking temporary intermittent Nurse Practitioner's for temporary short term and long-term clinical assignments. These NP will work a minimum of (3) thirteen-week assignments at VA Medical Centers throughout the country. While on assignment the NP will work full time at their assigned facility and may function in the role within an Occupational Health Clinic Setting and/or Primary Care setting. The primary responsibilities of this NP position include but are not limited to:

  • NP is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determine the appropriate delegation of task consistent with the NP's obligation to provide optimal care.
  • Provides direct patient/employee care and/or telehealth care to adults with medical issues, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of health care problems with may include prescription of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions according to VHA standards.
  • Provide population specific and age-specific care for employee/patients from young adulthood to senior years of life.
  • Independently manages delivery of care and collaborates with other members of the interdisciplinary health care team as necessary.
  • Initiate, plan, implement, evaluate, and appropriately document patient care based on identified measurable outcomes consistent with scope.
  • Anticipate and respond appropriately to emergencies, coordinate interventions, and evaluate responses through critical analysis of patient systems/operational situations.
  • Use Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) in compliance with designated facility programs.
    • Evaluates findings in collaboration with the supervising physician.
    • Complete Medical Reconciliation according to policy,
    • Writes appropriate provider ordered and follow up on implementation.
  • Document appropriately patients' History and Physical, as well as requesting appropriate consults.
  • Demonstrates leadership through guidance and direction of others who provide patient care.
  • Demonstrate grade-appropriate and consistent critical thinking skills.
    • Appropriately assesses, diagnosis, and treats patients.
    • Manages and treats patients safely and effectively, recognizing their practice core privileging agreement in alignment with Full Practice Authority.


Work Schedule: Intermittent appointment. When on assignment, RNs work varying full-time schedules. When not on assignment, employee is not working and is not earning a salary.

Assignment lengths are flexible to meet facility needs. NPs will be paid for the time worked, receive travel, lodging, meals, and incidental expenses competitive with private sector and in accordance with VA regulations. NPs new to VA will receive training on the special needs of Veterans and VA procedures.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Nurse Practitioner's Qualifications: In order to qualify all applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
  • Licensed as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner in any state.
  • Possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the ACEN (formerly NLNAC) or CCNE.
  • Maintain a full and current certification as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.


Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position are concerned with the mental and physical ability of the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and may include requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies.
