As a Biological Science Technician at the Livingston Stone National Fish Hatchery in Shasta Lake, CA, you will be responsible for performing daily operations with threatened or endangered fish species. This includes:
All aspects of fish husbandry, record keeping, data entry, water quality analysis and live feeds production. Care for larval Delta Smelt in a recirculating aquaculture system.
Working with other state and federal stakeholders in developing new rearing, transportation and tagging techniques.
Maintaining rotifer and artemia cultures, which will be vital to maintaining endangered delta smelt at the hatchery.
Following detailed sampling and laboratory procedures and protocols
Performing initial data analysis and data quality checks
Monitoring and recording data about water quality or quantity
Constructing and maintaining rearing systems for aquatic species, to include feeding and cleaning
Weighing, measuring, or counting aquatic organisms
Anesthetizing, marking, or tagging aquatic organisms
Logging samples and data to be used for analysis
Spawning and rearing eggs and embryos of aquatic species

Minimum Qualification [GS-06]
One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-05 in the Federal service. Experience may include (1) care and feeding of fish of all life stages; (2) recording and monitoring fish health; (3) maintaining and updating fish culture and water quality records; (4) maintaining and improving hatchery infrastructure, equipment, and grounds; (5) maintaining zooplankton cultures for use as live feeds in an aquaculture setting; and/or (6) rearing, distributing, and maintaining eggs, fry, parr, smolts, yearlings, and broodstock.
Minimum Qualification [GS-07]
One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-06 in the Federal service. Experience may include (1) care and feeding of fish of all life stages; (2) recording and monitoring fish health; (3) maintaining and updating fish culture and water quality records; (4) maintaining and improving hatchery infrastructure, equipment, and grounds; (5) rearing, distribution, and maintenance of eggs, fry, parr, smolts, yearlings, and broodstock; (6) collecting, processing, and inventorying eggs; (7) following established spawning procedures; (8) maintaining zooplankton cultures for use as live feeds in an aquaculture setting; and/or (9) performing routine health assessments, including necropsies, external examination of fish for parasites, collecting blood samples, and collecting ovarian fluid samples; OR
One full year (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours, or the number of semester/quarter hours the college or university deems to be one year) of graduate-level education at an accredited college or university in a discipline that is directly related to the position (e.g., fish biology, ichthyology, limnology, aquaculture, etc.); OR
A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
