Duties

  • Responsibilities at the GS-5 and GS-6 level:
  • Maintain recreation facilities such as toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters and other miscellaneous structures according to recreation program policies.
  • Assist senior technicians with visitor education and/or enforcement of rules and regulations within motorized / nonmotorized use areas and on trail systems.
  • Function as Collection Officer for recreation sites: Collect fees, count and reconcile money collected, and keep appropriate records.
  • Schedule daily activities, establishes maintenance schedules, and inspects cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans
  • Perform safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action.
  • Provide detailed information about recreation opportunities to visitors and explain rules and regulations.
  • Maintain contact and provide support to volunteers and partners such as Campground or Trail Host(s).
  • Responsibilities at GS-6 level:
  • Assist in the implementation of recreation operation and maintenance plans for developed and dispersed recreation sites.
  • Educate visitors and or enforce rules and regulations in recreation areas and on trail systems and resolve problems to assist visitors.
  • Inspects recreation areas, areas of concentrated public use, and special use permits for compliance with the permit and management plans, public health regulations, and safety plans.
  • Make repairs, remove or replaces facilities, or recommend closure of areas or facilities when hazards cannot be promptly eliminated.
  • Perform independently or as a leader of a small project crew on trail or facility maintenance and construction.
  • Provide visitor information and environmental education to encourage responsible public land use and stewardship.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-05 Level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, recreation management programs, civil or forest engineering, wildland fire science, public administration and planning (including community and urban planning), landscape architecture; resources management, environmental sciences, or other biological sciences (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable);
OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Examples of specialized experience are: Assisting in providing basic information to visitors on recreation regulations, opportunities, or restrictions; ensuring developed or dispersed recreation areas or trails were maintained in accordance with standards; installing signs; patrolling use areas to ensure appropriate use; performing small crew-based work, such as for recreation or trail maintenance projects.

For the GS-06 Level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level OR one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, recreation management programs, civil or forest engineering, wildland fire science, public administration and planning (including community and urban planning), landscape architecture; resources management, environmental sciences, or other biological sciences; OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Examples of specialized experience are: Inspect or maintain developed recreation facilities; lead or coordinate a small crew of employees or volunteers to accomplish recreation maintenance or trail construction projects; patrol developed or dispersed forest areas to monitor use or enforce federal regulations; serve as a fee collection officer; patrol use areas, making visitor contacts and providing visitor information; identifies or recommends corrective action for safety hazards within public use areas.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
