Nurse Practitioner serves as a Clinical Operations Coordinator in the Renal Transplant Department executing responsibilities that demonstrates leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care. The Nurse Practitioner (Clinical Operations Coordinator) is an EXPERT nurse, "with an enormous background of experience, who now has an intuitive grasp of each situation and zeros in on the accurate region of the problem without wasteful consideration of a large range of unfruitful, alternative diagnoses and solutions" (Benner). The Nurse Practitioner demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients.

The Nurse Practitioner (Clinical Operations Coordinator) demonstrates:

  • Leading and organizing delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care and discharge planning
  • Using advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes
  • Functioning as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities
  • Systematically evaluating current practice, and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise
  • Guiding, developing, and supporting staff from a leadership perspective
  • Using professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities.
  • Formulate and implement policies that are compliant with OPTN and hospital standard.
  • Manage budget of the program. Collaborate with contract and budget team to resolve any budget related issues
  • Certified as a Contracting Officer Representative and in charge of all transplant related contracts
  • Manage staffing of the program: hire and train new staff, evaluate staff performance, and ensure staff complete mandatory trainings
  • Work closely with team to promote transplant productivity, clinic utilization and capture of workload
  • Oversee the outpatient transplant clinic operations
  • In charge of Transplant QAPI
Preferred Experience: Previous experiences in clinical management and patient care ( ICU, inpatient medical surgical units or outpatient primary care clinic) are required. Experiences in taking care of ESRD patients in dialysis unit, kidney and /or other organ transplants are preferred.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM (Nights, weekends and Holidays as needed)

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Nurse Manager: Will have a minimum of a master's degree in nursing or in a related field. Board certification from a VA-approved certifying body preferred. Designated first-line supervisory authority, responsibility, and accountability for the 24/7 operations of their units, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with generally accepted standards of clinical practice.

Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL): Will have a minimum of a master's degree in nursing/clinical nurse leader major. Board certification as a CNL from a VA-approved certifying body required. Functions as a generalist at the point of care and manages and coordinates care of individuals and clinical groups. Responsible and accountable for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. Applies the nursing process and care management principles within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting, which will then enable effective implementation of health promotion and prevention practices, management of acute and chronic illnesses, and attainment of appropriate lengths of stay and the effective level of care. Core functions include daily assessment of patient care needs to determine the most appropriate use of expertise in clinical coordination, patient and staff education, attention to systems issues that require intervention, and quality and performance measures. Assists the nursing staff in the provision of complex patient care.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. This VA is an interdisciplinary teaching facility, providing medical, surgical, mental health, and long-term care of inpatients and outpatients. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.

Additional information

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
