This position is in the Office of Safety, Health, and Working Conditions which produces a wide range of information about workplace injuries and illnesses collected and reported annually through the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) and the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI). This position develops, maintains, and implements machine learning and natural language processing systems that support these BLS data products. Specifically, the duties of this position are the following:

  • Trains machine learning models for text classification, information extraction, and record-linkage tasks using libraries including scikit-learn, Tensorflow, and PyTorch.
  • Uses GPUs to accelerate the training of deep neural networks.
  • Monitors and maintains production machine learning systems.
  • Integrates new machine learning systems with production processes.
  • Creates and maintains web applications and REST API’s using the Python programming language.
  • Uses programming languages to extract, load, analyze, and manipulate data.
  • Serves as a consultant to staff on these topics and provides training to internal or external audiences through informal and formal training, presentations, and technical seminars.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:


Degree: in operations research; or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus.

Specialized Experience:

In addition to the above Basic Requirements applicants must have one year of specialized experience to the next lower grade, GS-12, in the Federal Service or Priviate Sector.

Specialized experience is defined as professional experience:

  • Developing, maintaining and implementing machine learning and natural language processing systems.
  • Creating and maintaining computer applications using the Python programming language.

Artificial Intelligence – Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools used to design systems that perform human intelligence functions.

Software Development – Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for designing, developing, and testing software in a given environment.
