Summary
What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

As a Hydrologic Technician within the Arizona Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Performs routine measurements of stage and discharge under a variety of field conditions applying established methods. Observes and notes hydraulic or environmental conditions.
Performs routine water-level and discharge measurements from wells and springs where field conditions require uniform and established methods be followed in order to collect representative data.
Performs routine field water-quality measurements such as water temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen and alkalinity. Various field conditions require a number of steps or grater attention to detail to collect representative data.
Computes, processes, and checks routine sediment samples where uniform and established methods exist. Computes and checks straightforward measurements for analyses and computation.
Performs installation, maintenance, servicing, and troubleshooting of sensing, recording and communications equipment and instrumentation. Calibrates meters and analytical equipment using appropriate techniques and protocols.
Assists in establishing vertical and horizontal datums using established electronic forms.
Enters, retrieves, edits, and analyzes simple surface, ground, and water quality data using a variety of databases, spreadsheets, and graphics software. Maintains current and accurate files to support data stored in USGS databases.
Operates a Government vehicle as an incidental driver.
Operates and/or maintains motorized watercraft.
Physical Demands: The work regularly requires considerable dexterity, agility, and strenuous physical exertion such as: climbing and/or working from tall ladders and scaffolding; work in areas where footing is treacherous such as slippery or icy river banks, steep rocky terrain, cableways, or fast-moving water; lifting heavy objects weighing 23 kilograms (50 pounds) or more, or crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
Work Environment: Office conditions do not require special safety precautions; field conditions may
include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow; hazardous conditions such as ice or flooding; or exposure to irritant or toxic chemicals. Work may require the use of personal protective equipment such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, respirators, or life jackets.
Conditions of Employment for the USGS Watercraft Safety Program:
Must be able to take and pass the Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) within six (6) months of employment. (Only applicable for those who are operating a boat)
Must be able to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification for the duration of employment.
Must be able to obtain and maintain Wilderness or Advanced First Aid certification for duration of employment. (Only applicable for employees who will be over an hour away from emergency services while on a boat).
Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by background investigation.
Selectee may be subject to serving a one-year probationary period.
Selectee must provide a valid state driver's license & safe driving record.
Selectee subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical exam.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
A valid state driver's license and current copy of your driving record will be required for this position.
This position is subject to a pre-employment Medical exam as a condition of employment.
Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Qualifications
For GS-05:
Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-5 level:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of this position. Specialized experience may include work as a technician or aid in engineering, earth, physical, or natural science, forestry, soil conservation, or surveying; trades or crafts work in maintenance or construction of facilities or equipment related to hydrology; drafting; or construction estimating if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.
Examples of GS-4 level work assignments include: 1) Making adjustments and minor repairs to water level recorders, or other equipment used in water investigations; 2) Following well-defined methods and designated formulas; computing, extracting, compiling, and presenting geological or hydrologic data in prescribed tabular or graphic form; 3) Computing mean daily gage heights from water stage record charts, editing record tapes, and making corrections based on field notes. For examples 1-3, the work assignments involved familiar conditions, concepts, and methods that were made in terms of the objectives to be achieved without explicit instruction as to work methods. Assignments involving new, more difficult, or unfamiliar areas of work were given with more specific guidance. Explicit instructions were provided for solving technical problems involving unfamiliar conditions, methods, or concepts.
**OR Applicants may substitute successful completion of a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of science (i.e., geology, chemistry, physics, geophysics, biology, ecology, mathematics, soils, forestry, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical science, atmospheric science) engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours, or the equivalent, in any combination of courses such as engineering, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics.
**OR A combination of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience may be used to meet the qualification requirements for GS-5. Only progressive education in excess of the first 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours (i.e., beyond the first two years) of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement, assuming the education includes the appropriate number of directly related semester hours, or the equivalent, in any combination of courses such as engineering, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics.
