Summary

This position is a permanent seasonal 18/8 position located on the Tahoe National Forest.

The incumbent performs work in support of the unit's recreation program. Responsible for implementing both annual and long-term work plans for developed recreation sites (campgrounds, day use sites, recreation residences, etc.) both developed and dispersed.

Duties

  • Duties are listed at full performance level GS-06:
  • Prepare annual updates of work needed and cost to bring recreation site conditions and operations up to full standard.
  • Participate in the development of the Unit's annual recreation work plans.
  • Recommend strategies on potential recreation problems arising from changing use patterns and new activities.
  • Maintain recreation facilities such as toilets, road closure gates, hand pumps, water systems, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters and other miscellaneous structures.
  • Assist in the implementation of recreation operation and maintenance plans including hand pumps/water systems for developed and dispersed recreation sites.
  • Make repairs, remove or replace facilities, or close areas of facilities when hazards cannot be promptly eliminated.
  • Schedule daily activities, including establishing maintenance schedules in order to inspect cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans.
  • Patrol management unit to collect use data, identify or correct unsafe conditions, answer visitor inquiries, and prevent vandalism.
  • Protect the scene of any incidents and relinquish control to police or other law enforcement officials.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For GS-05: One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04). Examples include: Inspected recreation area clean-up operations and performed safety hazard analysis of public recreation use areas; Patrolled wilderness to ensure that areas were operated, used, and maintained in accordance with wilderness management plans; Performed site maintenance, including cleanup and naturalizing at widely dispersed sites; Gathered, compiled, and reported recreation program data for use in monitoring and assessment activities and summarized data for use in recreation data management systems.
OR
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-4. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
OR
Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

For GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 federal grade level. Examples include: Inspected special use permits such as, outfitter guide operations, issue notices, and reported to supervisor; Inspected and maintained recreation facilities and areas; Coordinated or lead a small crew of volunteers to accomplish recreation maintenance and construction projects; Patrolled forest areas to enforce regulations and assisted with the enforcement of off-road vehicle restrictions.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

This announcement may be used to fill positions with a seasonal work schedule where full-time work is guaranteed for 18 pay periods and when not working, you will be placed in non-pay/non-duty status.
