    This position is located in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (CHSDM), Registrar Department. The employee is responsible for coordinating registration of all in-house and borrowed exhibitions and helps coordinate Cooper Hewitt managed traveling exhibitions as needed.

    Responsibilities

    • Responsible for maintaining physical, administrative, legal control over all objects in museum custody and assisting in overseeing all aspects of CHSDM’s registration program, including collections, exhibitions, and general museum procedures and policy.

    • Independently manages international loans, coordinating with customs broker; safeguards security of loan objects by acting as courier when necessary, ensuring that objects are packed, unpacked, monitored and documented with text descriptions, condition reports and images.

    • Oversees and manages the packing, shipping and receiving for all incoming loans and other objects entering the museum’s custody.  Independently makes arrangements for packing and shipment of domestic loans, including liaising with complex borrower or lender representative, assembling estimates, securing crater and shipper, preparing purchase paperwork, and notifying staff of shipment arrivals/departures to arrange for the movement, storage and unpacking of crates.

    • Responsible for ensuring that acquisitions for the collection comply with museum and Smithsonian policy and that all documentation, including internal forms, donor tax forms, insurance documents, related correspondence, and legal forms, is organized, easily retrievable, and digitized where possible.
