Duties

Help

As a Forensic Laboratory Technician Evidence your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Serves as entry level trainee. Receives training under the Branch Chief on the processes and procedures required for handling forensics evidence.
  • Receives and inventories evidence received from investigators
  • Creates case files and evidence tags, seals and secures evidence.
  • Transfers evidence to and from analysts, and to investigators when analysis is complete.
  • Basic collection, documentation, and management of evidence from crime scenes.
  • Follows established Lab protocol for safe handling of hazardous evidence, and proper laboratory hygiene.
  • Receives developmental assignments in basic lab procedures within lab setting (e.g., instrumental analysis of chemicals, preparation of reference samples and reagents, and the recording, collation and storage of data).
  • Assists designated senior Lab staff with quality assurance, quality control work to include validating instrumental and equipment performance.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification.

Minimum Qualification GS-6
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrated your ability to handle evidence in a law enforcement setting, including proper collection, documentation, sealing, and chain of custody procedures; maintain quality assurance in laboratory setting; course work in biology or chemistry studies including instrumental analysis; experience in biology or chemistry lab.

Time In Grade Requirement: Applicants must meet both eligibility and qualification requirements for the position of interest by the closing date of the JOA. Specifically,

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):

  • Knowledge of procedures in the safe handling and shipping of potentially hazardous chemicals and biologicals.
  • Basic knowledge of automated database and records management, sufficient to follow protocols and procedures as applied to a law enforcement evidence management system.
  • Knowledge of evidence handling procedures including documentation, sealing, and chain of custody, as it relates to law enforcement investigations.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and automated programs/databases for word processing, data storage and retrieval.
  • Knowledge of scientific techniques related to the analysis of chemical and biological materials using a variety of scientific instrumentation, including, but is not limited to, mass spectrometers, energy-dispersive x-ray systems, scanning electron microscopes, multi-wavelength instruments, and similar equipment, and the recording, collation and storage of data.
  • Knowledge of general scientific processes, procedures, and equipment used in a scientific laboratory.
  • Ability to follow standard procedures to determine the functional performance and calibration of scientific equipment.
  • Skill in working with established quality assurance standards in a laboratory setting and how to verify that those standards have been met.
