    Responsibilities

    As Deputy Inspector General (DIG), you will fully support the Inspector General, in the oversight of the conduct and supervision of audits and investigations concerning the programs and operations of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (Board).  You will be responsible for the oversight and management of all administrative and planning activities necessary to support the programmatic mission of the Office of the Inspector General.

The ideal candidate will be deft at acquiring and administering human capital, and financial, material and information resources. The Deputy Inspector General should also possess outstanding writing and editing abilities, to ensure high quality, accurate, audit and investigative deliverables that reflect appropriate substance, and should be proficient in liaison with external stakeholders, Congress, and senior leadership of the NRC, DNFSB and other federal agencies.

    Key duties and responsibilities are as follows:

    • Reporting directly to the Inspector General, this role serves effectively as a Chief Operating Officer of the organization, providing executive leadership of the day-to-day operations of the organization, overseeing the work of supervising subordinate managers, and a diverse, engaged workforce of auditors, investigators, and support staff, who conduct audits and investigations of sensitive programs that have a direct impact on national programs and policies.
    • Serves as the OIG’s subject matter expert on all matters related to program activities, participates as a member of the Inspector General’s Senior Staff, and makes meaningful contributions to core decisions about OIG policy.
    • Responsible for the coordination and recommendation of policies for activities designed to promote economy and efficiency in the administration of, and to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse or criminal activity, in the NRC and Board programs and operations.
    • Evaluates OIG program performance to provide guidance concerning the conduct of performance, financial, and contract audits; in addition to the conduct of investigations involving the integrity of agency programs and operations, allegations of fraud, waste and abuse, and violations of law or misconduct by agency employees and contractors at the NRC and DNFSB.
    • Assesses existing and proposed legislation and regulations involving the Commission/Board; makes recommendations about their impact on the economy and efficiency of administering programs and operations managed or financed by the Commission/Board.
    • Recommends and develops policies; conducts, supervises, or coordinates relationships among and between the Commission/Board Members, and Commission/Board Senior Leadership, and other federal, state, and local government agencies, the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE), Congress, and non-governmental entities, with respect to promoting economy and efficiency, preventing and detecting fraud, waste, and abuse; and identifying and prosecuting participants in such activities against the NRC/DNFSB or their funded programs.
    • Assists the Inspector General, the Chairman, and other managers of the Commission/Board and their Senior Leadership by furnishing information, analyses, appraisals, reports and recommendations concerning the effectiveness and efficiency of agency policies and programs, and of the organization and management of the Commission/Board in achieving policy and management objectives. Keeps these groups informed about problems and deficiencies involving the administration of the programs and operations of the Commission/Board, and the necessity for corrective action.
    • Supervises all administrative and planning activities necessary to support the programmatic mission of the OIG including the formulation, presentation and execution of the OIG budget; establishing and maintaining performance metrics and related reporting; management of the office’s independent personnel program; coordination of all intermediate and long range planning activities and tracking resources expenditure against established goals; preparation of the OIG’s Semiannual report to Congress, and all other administrative matters such as information systems, security, space management, property, contracting and small purchases, and document retention and control, including the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
