Duties

Help

The incumbent works to collect meadow health data in Valley Forge NHP following well-established protocols for the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program (I&M). The incumbent will navigate to established permanent meadow monitoring plots and collect data on species composition and distribution. Incumbent will navigate to vegetation plots using a GPS unit, topographic map and compass. The work will require carrying a 35+ pound pack over rough terrain and working in all weather conditions.

Data will be entered directly into a GPS dataform in the field using a portable field computer or entered on datasheets. Other duties may include pressing unknown plant specimens, equipment maintenance and repair, preparing soil samples for processing, data entry, and data quality assurance/quality control. Incumbents will be exposed to poison ivy, biting insects, and deer ticks that may carry Lyme disease.

Incumbent will also participate in invasive species management and target vegetation preservation (seeding/seed collection) in park meadows. Incumbent will prepare information about meadows and meadow management including summarizing data collected during the field season.

Physical Demands: The work requires physical exertion such as regular and recurring walking, hiking, or climbing over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending; crouching, stooping, lifting or reaching to observe, collect, or record field data; or in some situations the work may require physical exertion to scuba dive or operate a boat. Heavy items (e.g., equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.

Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office or outdoors. The work performed involves regular and recurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals

  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.


To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience for this position includes, but is not limited to:

  • Carrying out field studies on plants and/or plant ecology; inventorying and monitoring exotic plants; AND
  • leading or working on field crews in exotic plant eradication; AND
  • assisting with vegetation mapping, soils mapping, or grazing monitoring studies;
  • OR similar work usually concerned with higher plant life.
You must include hours worked per week.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled. You must include transcripts.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience that when totaled equal 100 percent or more of the qualifications requirement. For example, 6 months of specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 90 semester hours/3 years of undergraduate college study that meets the requirements mentioned above (50% of the qualifying education requirement). NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours is creditable toward meeting the qualification requirements. YOU MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS OR ITEMIZED COURSE LIST.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
