Summary

This position is located in Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (CHSDM).  The Incumbent will primarily be responsible for providing creative, technical support and advice through the Conservation and Exhibitions Departments for safe exhibition mount construction, matting and framing as needed, and mounts for photography and storage projects.

Duties

Help

  • The incumbent is primarily responsible for the fabrication of mounts/brackets for exhibition at CHSDM, for photography and/or storage, and assisting with the preparation of permanent collections for museum exhibitions.

  • The incumbent fabricates mounts/brackets for specified art objects from approved drawings and/or verbal instruction from the designer, exhibitions staff, curator, or conservator.

  • Working with staff conservators and collections managers, design and create storage housings for permanent collections.
  • Review design plans for CHSDM exhibitions with curators, exhibitions staff, designers, and conservators to make appropriate mount making/bracketing decisions and to assess the appropriateness of designs vis-à-vis installation issues.

  • The incumbent must be able to estimate mount/bracket fabrication schedules for long term projects and major museum exhibitions.

Selective Factor: Knowledge and skill in the use of power and manual tools such as acetylene torches, saws, grinders for museum mount making and photographic documentation.


Specialized Experience: In addition to meeting the Selective Factor above, you qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. 

For this position Specialized experience is defined as: Experience utilizing wide range of  practices, methods, and techniques of mount making for museum artifacts to ensure safe exhibition, photographic documentation, and storage of historic objects comprised of media ranging from metal, wood, ceramics, plastic, paint, leather, paper, textiles, and other organic and inorganic materials Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Knowledge and experience in the use of power and manual tools such as acetylene torches, saws, grinders for museum mount making and photographic documentation.

  2. Knowledge and experience of museum processes such as object handling, collections management, research, exhibition, photography, and conservation
  3. Ability to develop original designs, concepts and visual styles that relate to mount making (including metal working, wood working, plexiglass fabrication, conservation approved foams, and cover fabrics, padding and coatings).

  4. Ability to budget within fiscal constraints and accurately account for purchases and have knowledge of supply sources for fabrication materials.

  5. Knowledge and experience of established practices, methods, and techniques of mount making for museum artifacts for the safe exhibition, photographic documentation, and storage of historic objects of great value and significance.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
